I cannot seem to notice when this happens but once and a while, the brightness control via the fn key stop working. If I go in the vista mobility panel, the brightness control box is also absent. Since I do not know which service is responsible for this I couldn't check in the task manager if something was missing.

Does anyone ever notice this? If so what causes this and how can it be fixed?

    Thanks

The exact same think has happened to me a few times and I have never been able to figure it out. Do you connect an external monitor? I have noticed that with me it happens after disconnecting an external display and when on battery, but I have no idea if this has something to do with it or if it is just a coincidence.

No, I never connected an external display so far. My feeling is that this could be yet an other "device X doesn't work after going out of hibernation" problem in vista. The SP1 seems to patch like 5 to 10 of such occurences of this problem.

Anyone else noticed this and how to reproduce it?

    Thanks

I've also had the same problem coming out of hibernation or standby occasionally. The "fix" is to close the lid of the laptop, then reopen it. The controls should show up and work again.

Alternativelly, does someone could tell what services we should look for and maybe manually run from the task manager to restart this feature?

I still got this problem today after awakening from a sleep or hibernate (didn't notice which). I did a test: I turned it back in hibernate (using Fn + F12). Let it turn off. Turned it back on. As the initial window was showing (the one saying windows is loading with the scroll bar), I noticed the Fn + up and end keys was working. Then, as I got to the logon screen, it stopped. Once inside my vista account, it still wasn't working and the green hud showing lighting levels wasn't as well. This really feels like vista overrides the BIOS / firmware behavior. Note: All other Fn short cuts work from what I know.

Anyone with suggestions? Is there a vista patch for this?

    Thanks

Just rebooted and looked in the task manager.

There are three processes running which could be related to this. They are "TPHKSVC.exe", "TPOSDSVC.exe" and "TPONSCR.exe". They are located in "C:\Program Files\Lenovo\HOTKEY" as well as in "C:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERS\HOTKEY\OSD".

Next time you see this problem, check if these three are running. If not, run them manually from the task manager file / new task menu or the program file folder above.

An other temporary fix alternative to closing the lid can be to log off your current session and login back. Still, a permanent fix for this would be welcomed.

    Any other input is appreciated.

I got this problem this morning coming out of hibernate and checked the processes in the task manager. It doesn't seem like it is the problem... at least, the process are running.

I had hopes that the NVidia 140M driver update (from the Microsoft update) would cure this but doesn't seem like it.

Let us know if you find something new. This is really annoying.
