Lenovo to restart ThinkPad production in Japan - AJW by The Asahi Shimbun

So. Some Thinkpads will be made in Japan. I'm going to doubt Thinkpads sold to those to (most of) us on the other side of the Pacific will be Japanese made though, considering that the Yen is rather strong, and seems to be an attempt to win market share in Japan rather than any efficiency advantage.

Lenovo is planning to sell NEC's LaVie Z overseas (hopefully that means US since any country outside Japan is technically overseas). Amazing 13 inch machine, on paper at least. Under 2lbs, 8hr battery life.

The main advantage will be better Quality controls. Japanese are supposed to be quite strict about that, or at least so I heard.

Are all ThinkPads designed in Japan, or now they are going to be designed and partially produced in Japan? I'll take my JDM ThinkPad.

I doubt one factory will be enough for all Thinkpads to be made in Japan. Probably will either be just premium models, or Japanese market only. I'd definitely pay extra for a made in Japan Thinkpad though.

I think most of the models created at this factory will be for Japanese consumers only.

I purposely buy things Made in Japan if at all possible. I've found the quality to be flawless. I had a Toughbook that was Japanese made and pretty much bulletproof. I would certainly pay a premium!

Since its exclusive, I wonder of Dynamism/Conics/etc are going to be selling made in Japan Thinkpads globally.

    It can be true.
Most of Thinkpad software are made in Japan already.

I don't see how the quality can be increased just by producing thinkpads in Japan. thinkpads are made by mashines and they will use these and the same processes in Japan just as in China. So how do you think quality will increase?

Also, does a 'bulletproof toughbook' made in Japan (like hotsauce said) say anything about the overall quality of notebooks made in Japan? I don't think so. As stated, it is a premium product. That is like comparing a Mercedes S class produced in Germany to a Toyota Yaris produced in Japan. Just because the S class is clearly 'better' in overall quality, it doesn't mean that all german car manufacturers produce better quality cars over Japan.

Do you actually think Lenovo (chinese!) company wants to classify their Japanese factories as better quality factories?

"Made in Japan" used to be very reliable decades ago.

However now I'm not impressed by MIJ any longer.

do u know if t430s are made in japan?

Why 'cause for political purpose and as much as I can, I don't wanna buy goods made in China, Taiwan, South Korea...etc.

But it's pretty hard to find laptop assembled in USA/Europe/Japan :( .

PS: no need to start flaming/trolling...etc... this is my choice!

Hmm? Japanese Thinkpads? I'd love one if I was in the market for a new laptop right now. However, I'm still confident that my W520 will last me a few years (if not, I still have the extended warranty to fall back on at least).

Yeah, good luck with that. They're all pretty much made in China/Taiwan now. Perhaps Toughbooks are still made in Japan, though obviously they're a bit expensive. Probably the only way to buy a Made in USA laptop would be to build a laptop yourself, though the parts are still going to be made in China/Taiwan. Does NEC still make laptops? (I don't remember)

South Korea's a pretty decent place, but I don't recall them being a major computer producer (aside from Samsung). I usually think of Kia/Hunydai (and StarCraft :p).

Almost all laptops are from China because that is where almost all ODMs do their assembly. Of course you have a couple rare exceptions, but good luck trying to find a model from XX ODM that isn't from China.

Japan seems to have a tendency of being grouped with the West rather than the East sometimes. Probably because they were the first to westernize in the region.

As for Japanese made laptops. Anything from Panasonic, and high end models from other Japanese manufacturers (Sony, Fujitsu, NEC, Toshiba, etc).

As for quality. I don't think quality will go up significantly. They are the same designs still. The only reason that most Japanese made laptops are high quality is much more likely due to the fact that only premium laptops are still made in Japan nowadays rather than any inherent superiority of Japanese manufacturing.

btw, NEC still makes laptops. The article that I posted to start the thread mentions the fact that Lenovo will be selling one of their laptops (LaVie Z) overseas.
