I was playing around with a magnet on my desk when it got attracted to the keyboard area of my T420. Is there any harm in having a magnet near a laptop like this?

If it's a refrigerator magnet, I don't see anything wrong with it. But if it was something like a Rare Earth magnet, I'd be surprised if it didn't screw anything up in there. Regardless...
**never** leave magnets near computers! Never know what kind of chances you're taking, no matter the magnetism of the magnet. -
Small magnets are no harm and many laptops (including some Lenovo models) have them embedded into the lid, to detect it being closed.
Just keep very strong magnets away from the HDD area. -
Thinkpads do have metal in them, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a magnet attracted to a surface on your T420. As others have mentioned, do be sure to keep strong magnets away from computers, particularly if you have a conventional spinning hard drive.
