I recently did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate. I used the System Update program from Lenovo's website to automatically download and install most of the drivers. I then used Windows Update to install a few missing items. The Device Manager doesn't show any issues. Everything is perfect. However, when I played a movie I noticed that the video playback would suffer (stutter) with the slightest tilt of my laptop. That has never happened before. I thought it could have been an issue with the Power Manager setting but it's at Maximum Performance. Is this an issue due to Windows 7 or is my laptop facing a hardware problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Active Protection System? activated?

    Try lower the sensitivity...

I did when I had Windows XP. Not sure if I would need to do another since I did a clean install.

I've never heard of it. I will look into it.

... It's sensitivity is set to High. Is this the default selection? I've set it to the lowest level but I still experience the stuttering. It only stops when I turn off the Active Protection System. Is this protection system turned off by default for Windows XP?

The APS is supposed to park the hard drive head when there's movement to protect the harddrive. When the head is parked it can't 'read' hence the stuttering when watching video.

Is this a big problem? are you watching videos on the train or something..

I found its quite useful.. i know a couple of people well dells that had hard drives die due to movement.

Usually comes installed and enabled on the default image even in xp.. unless you formatted or something and didn't install it.

Anyway its not really a windows 7/xp thing and its not that the software degrades performance of the entire machine.. just suspends IO - actual cpu /ram performance doesn't change

Depends if your media player supports the functionality but you could try upping the read buffer so it stores more of it into ram or jsut disable APS.. or get an SSD =P

Thank you for the information. I never have experienced this stuttering issue before. Not with the original OS or after a clean installation, where I formatted. I assume this is a common issue and many people turn off the APS. Even on a low sensitivity level the stuttering occurs when I tilt (adjusting my position in bed) the Laptop. As of right now I'll have to turn it off. Thanks, again.

If you have not already done so, activate the "Adaptive" learning capability of the APS. I found, to my surprise, that it actually seems to work.

I turned the APS off, but I will give it another shot. Hopefully the "Adaptive" learning will surprise me.

Do let us (me) know if the "adaptive" feature works for you. Cheers!

It's definitely APS. I noticed this quite frequently on my tablet as I hold it as a clipboard frequently and it would just hang. It's actually one of the primary reasons I moved to an SSD.
