Hi all, I was given a Lenovo T61 and I am very delighted with the battery life. There is only one problem, the DVD/CD-RW (mats-hita ujda775) should read DVDs but it doesn't. When I place a DVD inside it tries to spin it but it stops right away. I don't know what to do. The worst thing is that it is a work computer and if I give it back to my firm for repairs I won't take it back in the next 3-4 months (our repairs always take so long). Is there something else I could do?

Is this with commercial pressed DVDs, burned DVDs, or both?

Are the same problem discs readable in another DVD drive?

It is with some of my burned dvds, haven't tryed with commercial ones, but i'll try right away. And some of my burned dvds work (setup vista or setup opensuse), but others don't. I'll try with commercials right away.

    Here are the results:
with the two commercial dvds I have it works perfectly. Now i'm confused: my burned dvds work on all other computers i have (10 actually) without problems. They're all burned using CDBurnerXP under win vista and the lenovo is with winXP, could this be the problem?

    Something else:
All of my burned dvds (for example such burned on xp with nero) don't work. DVDs which work are: commercial, or such burned from iso (or other types of) images... Idea? Do Philips and Mat****a have "something" against self-burned dvds?

In case the optical drive happened to be faulty, you may easily pop the drive out of the UltraBay slot and send it for replacement as such. There's no need to give in the laptop itself.

I think these drives are picky about the media used. Your not the only one with that problem. You can have Lenovo send you a new one if you feel you have a defective drive.

Take one of the DVD's that it could not read and go into Rescue & Recovery and run the diags on the DVD drive and see if it fails to read it through there.

No I cannot actually just take out the dvd-rom since the computer is from my firm and our technicians will want to see the problem, so I'll have to give the whole computer back.

So I tried it with rescue & recovery (only dvd tests). When I insert a "non-readable" dvd, after a minute or two it just says "please insert a dvd disc".
When I insert a dvd, it just tries to spin it and then it stops after less then a second (that's what i can understand from what i hear ...). And this only happens with self-burned dvds...

I think that it cannot read all the dvds burned by my older laptop. Every other dvd I checked (which I havent burned with the laptop, but with a desktop computer for example) works ...
    Strange ...

The idea with the registry editing didn't help. I can see the cd but it doesn't spin the inserted dvds. Where can I check for new firmware? What is the site of Matshi-ta?
