    Hi...

Just wondering how much RAM the R400 (or a similar class of machine) can take...?

Also, would I be correct to assume that increasing the responsiveness of the laptop is best served by upgrading the HDD to a SSD as opposed to increasing the RAM from 4GB to 8GB (or whatever is the possible limit)?

    Thanks

8 gigs is the max. Unless you use up all then upgrading them is not going to do anything, ssd will give lot better response.

The Rx00, Tx00, Xx00, and Wx00 computers can all take 8GB max of RAM (except the W700, which I think may support 16GB of RAM - correct me if I am wrong). Yep, an SSD will give you more noticeable differences in responsiveness. I would argue that for most users, you won't be able to tell the difference once you have above 3GB of RAM.

The W510 and the W701 are the ones that can have 16GB of memory as they've got four dimm slots.

Very few programs will consume more than 4GB RAM at this current climate, while it does give you extra breathing space for the future it won't affect performance that much.

The SSD would be the most significant upgrade you can perform on your system if you have a standard hard drive, the last time I looked SSD prices have become slightly affordable (well here in the UK). But if you're planning to go down such route I would advise thinking of adding a second standard hard drive as capacity are rather limited on SSD's.

W510 with dual core i7 gets only 2 dimm slots.
