Okay, this is the situation, I broke my X30 about a month ago, dropped it and ripped out the screen connector. Given the accessories, I decided to get a X32 to replace it, an X32-2672. It came with a 60GB HD and 1GB of memory, so I decided to upgrade, I ordered 2-1GB memory sticks, work great. I also ordered a large 250GB WD HD. Newegg weblink::

Okay, I still had my restoration disc from my X30, so I used that to reinstall XP Pro, it install with no issues. The problem is this.

    1st Partition, Drive C = 9.50GB
    2nd Partition, Recovery Drive = 5.98GB
Unallocated space = 132GB, WHAT?? what happened to the other 235GB??

I plan to try and reinstall the OS a second time, or do I need to use a standard OEM OS disc to install windows. OR?? Is this HD to large, or no compatiable??

Now it's 21 people, great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   :( :(

Okay, well, I tried to preformat a partition at 50, but then after loading the OS, the OS Drive was 27GB and unallocated, 100GB. So basically, the notebook does not take a larger HD. I happened to have a 120GB from my last notebook, Clevo D900T, so I tried that one and that one worked.  So I am thinking a 160GB HD might work, but I will have to RMA the 250GB HD to get the 160GB HD. Thanks for the help.

Try and be a little nicer...

Anyways, the hard drive is definitely not incompatible. My guess would be that the installer was only designed to work with certain hard drives. One way to remedy this would be to use an OEM disc. Another option is to use a partition resizer. Vista has one built in. A freely available one is gParted. A commercial program would be Partition Magic.

Also, what program was displaying those hard drive statistics?

    a) make sure the limit capacity jumper is NOT enabled on the new hard drive
    b) make sure you have the latest bios update
    c) use an xp install disc that has sp2 already on it

bios/motherboard must also support 48bit LBA (addressing) in order for you to get all your space (137gig+). There might be a few work arounds but I dont know of any off the top of my head as I havent run into this problem in a while.

    check out http://www.48bitlba.com/

also try using the OEM disc the hard drive came with. see if you can "see" all of the space and partition it

    ps

The help you receive here is free and not required. Just because someone looks at your post does not mean they have the solution. You may wish to keep these facts in mind when posting.

I don't think a X32 will have any trouble seeing larger hard drives. Service Pack 2 is required or Service Pack 4 if you're running 2K, to see partition sizes larger than 137GB. I suspect your X30's recovery discs predate Service Pack 2.

Okay, I should not be overly stressed over my stituation (drinking a few beers does not help). I formally apoligize for my comments.

I used the XP>Computer Management>Disk Management, to see the size of HARD Drive, the size given as an external drive was 232GB, but I got lower results as a main HD, so I know it is the notebook.

I am guessing that the restoration disc are pre-SPs, because I had to install SP2 with the installation of the 120GB HD. I did partition the HD drive prior, 30GB, 40GB & 40GB. So I don't know it partitioning the HD prior to install will help.

I am going to look for my XP Pro SP2 OEM disc and use that to reinstall XP Pro, maybe that will help.

    Thanks for the advise.

if you cant find an xp install disc with xp2, you can build one yourself using nlite

also give this site a shot
    http://www.largeharddrivesupport.windowsreinstall.com/winxp.htm

I think you can also do a registry edit to enable LBA.
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=303013

but first do a bios update to the latest version and then proceed with the above link(s)

Well, I found my XP Pro SP2 Disc and installed it with no issues, it recognized the whole HD, so I then broke it down to 50GB Main, 90GB 2nd Drive, and 90GB 3rd Drive, with a 7GB for a Recovery Partition.

    Thanks for the help.

This is along the same vein. What types of issues did you face with the 160gb drive install on your 700m?
