Hey guys.
I bought a dell e1505 and so far, 1 key has fallen off, I got it replaced and now another is coming off. Now, I am getting the NMI parity error and Ive only had this laptop for 1.5 years.
I am looking for a way more reliable laptop.
I am wondering, Does the R61 T61 or X series all have the off centered screen?
That is the only real hesitation. Would the R or T fit me better? I also want this laptop to last about 3-4 years without problems as opposed to my crappy dell.
I would mainly using this laptop for surfing net, watching dvds, some comp games, some photo and maybe a little video editing, counter strike source, warcraft 3, battlefield 2, half life, starcraft 2 when it comes out etc, and music and photos
Also, is right now a good time to buy with a contractors discount? Or should I wait? Also, do you know if the contractor's discount stacks on top of the holiday special?
Thanks!

Personally, when I viewed the R61 in person, I completely forgot about its off-centeredness. It never bothered me. -
Although the off-centered screen is noticeable when you look for it, when you actually use the laptop it doesn't even phase you at all. Its really wierd how it works but don't make that your only incentive not to get it

I don't notice the off centered screen at all.

Like everyone has said, don't let that deter you at all, it's really a non issue for most. Unless you're concerned with people coming up to you at Starbucks and saying something like "That's not a Macbook,The screen is off center, I have a Macbook, I'm cool!"
You'll be Ok -
I just got my T61 a couple of weeks ago and I can't notice the off-centered screen either. Once you turn the laptop on, you never notice the offset.

You don't notice the offset even a little bit.

I agree with the rest of the sentiments. Being a design/aesthetics geek myself, I can understand your hesitation. However, I didn't notice as soon as I actually used a T61.
As for the X61, the screen is actually minimally off center. However not even close to the gap on the R61/T61. In fact, it is so minimal that I didn't notice until I just looked at the bezel 1 minute agoAnd I have had mine since the beginning of August.
Based on your needs I would recommend either the R or T-series. Since you watch movies, play quite a few games and generally multimedia, you will appreciate the larger screen and more powerful graphics, compared to the X61.
But if you need to frequently move it around like I do, and work on the plane, then the X61 is hard to beat in the power-to-weight/size race. -
I got my R61i about two weeks ago, and I have to say I love it. It hasnt had a single problem so far. Every thing works superb on it. I only have 1 gig ram installed and this does me fine. Start up is a little slower, but once running is fine. For more serious users, like those who play games, I would recommend an extra gig. As for the off centered screen- does not faze me one bit. When the screen is on you dont even really notice it.
One major thing I have noticed the machine stays ultra cool during use. The top always feels cool and only really get's a little warm where your palms rest.
Thinkpads are tough and hard wearing. You can actually feel the quality built is strong. Not like my gf's Compaq which feels like plastic fantastic. I would recommend Thinkpads to anyone. -
no matter wht thinkpad you get it will be much more durable then a dell plus it looks more professional. I dropped my thinkpad 2nd day cuz i forgot it was in my backpack and it still runs gooooood.
Maybe getting one!
