I want to upgrade memory of my old machine Thinkpad T60 from 1 GB to 2 GB. Currently it has 1GB PC2-5300 667MHz 2DIMM (i.e. 500 MB each in two slots). I have just ordered 2GB PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM). I am going to remove one chip (500 MB) and replace it with new 2 GB memory. Thus, total memory available will be 2.5 GB (2GB + 500 MB). If I do so, is there any problem using two different capacity of memory chips together? i.e. one is 2 GB an another is 500 MB only. Is it compatible with each other? or should I remove both 500 MB memory chips and use only 2GB memory chip in one slot. I am a bit  Please help!!

You can do that. But it is better to mix 2 gigs with an one gig stick.

With the T60, you can install RAM modules one at a time, and you can mix two modules of different densities. So, 2GB + 500MB will be as good as any configuration.

(By the way, the Intel chipset in some T60 machine types imposes a 3GB limitation, so it would be a waste to install 2GB + 2GB.)

More RAM is always better in my experience so having 2.5GB vs 2GB (even though mismatched) will still yield better performance!
