I just bought another T61, which has T7500 CPU and XP. I would like to buy more memory for it.

For my previous T61 which has T7700, I added extra memory of the following specs:

    DDR2 PC2-5300 (667MHz)

There is a memory deal at Dell.com and memory has the following specs:
    https://ecomm2.dell.com/dellstore/basket.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&itemtype=SNA

    DDR2 PC2-5400 (667MHz)

My question: what is the difference between PC2-5300 and PC2-5400. Does this PC2-5400 work with my new T61?

    Thanks!

    They are the same thing...

    -hot ram deals

As long as its DDR-666 200-pin SODIMM it will work.

    Another question:

My new T61 comes with 1GB 1 DIMM memory. Now I am going to add another 1 DIM 2GB (so the memory total will be 3 GB) This un-balance of memory will affect the performance of my computer?

    Thanks!

No you'll be fine with that configuration.

It's my understanding that with the 1GB + 2GB setup you will no longer have "dual channel". However, in recent tests the benefits of dual channel are not noticeable in real use. I wouldn't hesitate to go with a 3GB set-up because of dual channel.

However, with RAM being so cheap. You might want to consider putting in 4GB. A 32-bit OS will recognize about 3.2GB and run just fine, but if you later decide to upgrade to 64-bit you'll be able to utilize all 4GB. Here is the RAM I am using: http://shop2.outpost.com/{q74rhzG04...CEr9NXxrw**.node2?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
Which is currently being sold for the ridiculously low price of $59.99 FREE SHIPPING! (after a $30 rebate). I paid more when I got mine but it was worth it. Lifetime warranty.

Don't get suckered into paying more for laptop RAM. All of the ones that come with a lifetime warranty are using the same micron chips. Desktop RAM... that's a different story.

i got the 3gb setup after buying 1gb from lenovo and 2gb from newegg. i love the performance it provides.

if he later decides to upgrade to a 64 bit OS, one could argue that RAM will be cheaper then than now, in which case he would seem to be better off waiting to buy the second 2gb DIMM then rather than in advance. [this is what i'm going to do once the Vista successor is released :p ]

That'll probably be in about 5 years.
