What's a good messenger bag for the Lenovo X201 w/ 6-cell battery? I'm looking for a smaller bag that fits the laptop and a pair of headphones. Thx.

You could try the Waterfield Muzetto which should give you a compact bag with some extra storage; it's a great bag from what I've been seeing but at $230USD it's not cheap. If you can find one, another recommendation would be the ThinkPad Ultraportable Carrying Case, but that one's been discontinued for while and fairly hard to find.

There's also the STM Alley, which I might end up getting. It's much less expensive at around $30USD, but I'm not 100% sure about the build quality.

A bit larger than I want. Thx.

I looked into all three. I can't find anyone selling the Thinkpad case. The Muzetto is too slim and might not be able to hold my headphones without a visible bulge. The STM Alley seems to be a great candidate. Thx for the suggestions! Cheers.

I came across an alternative to the STM case:

    Case Logic e-Sling Large

I like the fact that the case has no visible openings when closed, making it safe for rain and snow (unlike the STM case). It's also slightly smaller. Cheers.

That one looks pretty good, and I did forget to mention the flap issue on the Alley. As long as it'd hold an X200 with a 9-cell battery that'd be a great bag.

Is that an Oakley? What model/size is that thing? I'm admittedly intrigued by the design.

I've been searching for a decent messenger bag for my 2530p (assume its about the same size as a X200). I did consider the e-sling but its pricey (about $70 and considering built quality) here (Mexico) since some people started using this for the Ipad.

I don't know the model however, the size is big enough for 15 or maybe 17 inches. It is oakley, they have awesome military design.

I like the TimBuk2 messenger bags with the laptop insert. A size "small" holds my x200s with 6 cell comfortably; however, there would not be a lot of room leftover for your headphones. The medium is quite a bit larger, I'd say it's sized more for a 15" laptop. The nice think about TimBuk2 is the customization options - you can get exactly the colors/style/accessories that you want.

Yep, it's a lil' too big for what I'm looking for. Thanks.

Very nice. I like the "D-Lux Messenger Bondage (small)" version. I believe that there's space inside for my headphones. I'm tempted to order one. Thank you!

It depends on how much stuff you carry with you. I think there will be plenty of room for laptop + headphones + cell phone + glasses + power cord. But if you want to add a book, a bottle of water, and a sandwich too, it won't all fit easily in a "small".

The "medium" is a lot larger than the "small" though, so I would advise you get the "small" for an x200.

The laptop sleeve in the picture you showed looks slimmer than the one in my bag (mine is 1.5 years old) so the new design might allow you a bit more room.

Hm... there are a bevy of choices, and I think I might need some help deciding what might be best for me, too. :/ Here's what I'll be carrying on a daily basis:

    X200(w/6-cell, but I'll eventually be getting a 9-cell)
    65W power adapter and cord
    ThinkPad Bluetooth Laser Mouse
    2x AA batteries(spare)
    Cell phone(LG EnV3)
    spare 2.5" external HDD
    Optimus digital audio recorder
    iPod Touch
    Kodak M1035 digital camera
Cables for iPod, phone, and external HDD
Koss earbuds(sometimes my pair of Bose 'on the ear' headphones; similar in size to the OP's)

It looks like the e-sling would be the best of the bunch, but any suggestions? Also, are there any retractable/compact cords I can get?

I second the Timbuk2 bag option. They're great bags, especially if you order a custom made one.

Good points. BTW, it's not a sleeve. It's a padded compartment sewn to the back of the D-Lux Messenger Bondage bag.

There's also the Classic Messenger 2010, which has an unpadded compartment. Cheers.

It's the discontinued Oakley S.I. Computer Bag.

Is Timbuk2 really that great? I have seen mixed reviews on some of their latest bags.

For an X201, they have many options. For a W510 it's a different story.

I think so. I've owned several Timbuk2 bags and they've all been nice, but especially my custom bag. The custom ones are put together in San Francisco, and you know it's hard to find anything made in the USA anymore.

Timbuk2 calls it "a molded foam, ultrastudded laptop sleeve" but you're right to make the distinction with what many people here think of as a 'sleeve'.

There are 5 of them in our household and we are generally pleased with their performance. Actually, we're down to 4 right now. The interior pocket of a bag I ordered on 3/7/2005 started to rip and I sent it in for repair. They said it's too old and beat up to repair so they gave me full credit of what I paid in 2005 towards a new bag.

Really, though the big deal with TimBuk2 in my opinion is the "build-a-bag" setup: you can get the color(s) and options you want.

Note that the last bag I bought from them was 1.5 years ago.

I found a video review of the E-sling mentioned earlier. As I'm trying to keep bulk down to a minimum when I carry this rig, this looks neigh near perfect. I still have to figure out if it'll hold an X200 with a 9-cell in it, though.

    Edit: The E-sling has a notebook compartment dimension of 11.8" x 9.1" x 1.3". The X200(4 or 6-cell) measures at 11.6" x 8.3" x 0.8-1.3"(depending on 4 or 6-cell), which will definitely fit. The 9-cell is 11.6" x 9.2" x 1.3"... it's just slightly larger than the compartment but I really think it'll fit, albeit snugly... possibly even with my neoprene sleeve.

It's padded enough to absorb shocks or shakes, but it doesn't much firmness that keeps the bag flat.

Okay... this has been a great thread with some excellent bag suggestions. I ended up getting the Case Logic e-Sleeve for my X200. I would have liked the Muzetto I suggested, but my current budget can't really fit it and the e-Sleeve is currently on sale on Amazon for less than $30USD. The build quality is a little hit-or-miss from reviews, but much more hit than miss. If anyone's interested I'll post up a review here when I get it.

I didn't realize it until today, but a coworker of mine carries his 17" MBP in a Timbuk2 case. Even the smaller sized one is too big for me, but the build quality and materials are extremely impressive. The customization options are great, too.

Cool! Please post some pics of the X200 inside the E-Sleeve when you can. I'm leaning towards a couple of Timbuk2's:

D-Lux Messenger Racing Stripe (small) for my X201 and some small items like sunglasses & headphones and maybe a small water bottle.

Freestyle Netbook Messenger (Extra small) for my iPad and headphones.

    Cheers,

    Sabesh.

PS> If one wants to splurge, the Saddleback medium satchel maybe an option :)

Alright... bumping up with some news. I ordered the e-sling on Amazon yesterday and was expecting shipping to take about a week(that's what the confirmation email from Amazon even said this morning. It actually arrived today.

I'll be taking pictures of my new ultramobile setup here shortly, but from what I see right now the X200 is about the e-sling's limit on notebook portability. It's an extremely snug fit and may even be a little too snug for some users' comfort.

Edit: Here are some pics of the E-sling fully loaded with everything I'd possibly be carrying with my X200, as if I were going off on a trip somewhere. I'm surprised at how much this bag can carry, as I pretty much put everything I would carry with my T400 in it without a hitch... and the bag I use with my T400 is much, much larger. Great space utilization on this case.

Interior of one of the front pockets to show its depth.

Main compartment with everything in it: my phone, iPod Touch, digital audio recorder, external ODD, Bluetooth mouse, power adapter, Koss earbuds, and external HDD.

Removed the power cable to the adapter to show things inside more clearly.

The compartment with the X200 in it. It's a very tight fit, but it might be able to fit one with a 9-cell. Expect some stuffing to do so, though.

Interior of the notebook compartment without the X200.

And, here's a YouTube video review I made of this bag with the X200 in it. It's a lot more comprehensive than the pics.

I think thinkpads should only be matched with "thinkcase" from lenovo to retain the professionalism.

It's not that I exactly 'know' him but I have corresponded with him a few times in regards to a item that I was trying to sell (keyboard) on the Geekhack forums.

Which is one of my main decisions when choosing a notebook, and the superior keyboard on my X200 seals the deal, alongside the superb qualities of being a thin, light and strong powerhouse.

PS: I got a WaterField Designs Sleevecase and added the option of 'D-Rings' (in case I want to use it alone as a slingbag) and slip it inside my Timbuk2 Medium Size Messenger. Works well as a messenger bag with tons of extra space.

The only thing I don't like about Lenovo bags (or other high dollar branded bags like Tumi) is they make stronger targets for thieves.
