How do I activate the middle click button in Firefox so I can open a link in new tabs and close tabs? I have tried accessing the firefox about:config settings and none of them work. I can use the middle button to scroll web pages, but the click function does not work.
I have also tried using the mouse/trackpad settings and I can enable middle click only if I disable the thinkpad "scrolling" function.
I've used the T400 before and was able to get both smooth scrolling and middle click working... so there must be a way!

There's no way to do both in Windows easily. There are a few threads on the forum where someone made a program using Synaptic's API to do both and another thread where you get roughly the same thing using a macro program (AutoHotkey).

What's wrong with using the regular scrolling instead of the thinkpad scrolling? It's pretty much the same thing.

If you're willing to move your fingers down a few inches, a three-finger push on the trackpad will open a link in a new tab

And you still have smooth scrolling even if you set it to 'neither.' -
Goto Mouse Properties/Ultranav
Select scrolling/smooth and then click settings in that box...
In Scrolling Type, select Smooth.
In Firefox4, if you middle click on a link another tab will open, middle-click elsewhere and you get the smooth scroll.
The "smooth" setting does bust scrolling in some dialog boxes, but it works exactly the way I want in Firefox and that's good enough. -
1) Installed firefox "tab utilities" addon and set "right click same as middle click". So I right click on links to open them in a new tab.
2) Installed "True X-Mouse" so that I can "drag over text to copy" (ie no middle click required) and so that I can "middle click to paste" (again, no middle click required). I was used to similar action in linux, and really missed it in Windows. It is great being able to copy/paste without having to right click.
3) For extra fun, I installed Synaptics Pointing Device drivers in order to turn on "chiral" scrolling which enables you to scroll by circling your finger on the track pad. The faster you circle, the faster it scrolls - very cool. I still use the trackpoint and middle button for scrolling quite a bit of the time, but sometimes chiral scrolling is more convenient. Also, and I might be imagining it, but two finger scrolling seems to be smoother using the Synaptics drivers. Note: possibly you can activate chiral scrolling without the Synaptics drivers - not sure.
4) Installed "KeyTweak" to remap some of my keys that were driving me nuts. I would occasionally accidentally hit the "page back" or "page forward" keys instead of the "left arrow" or "right arrow" keys which would result in work I was typing in going bye bye. I remapped the "page back" to be "page down" and "page forward" to be "page up", so that now page down/up are located in a more convenient place (AND I don't lose work anymore!).
All of the above has really enhanced my experience with the X220
Good luck! -
I was not aware of this functionality, but I just tested it with Linux and it worked without any configuring.
