    stupid question, but can the mini DP on T430 to HDMI on TV carry sound too?

    Yes it can, assuming the adapter is one that passes sound through (most do).

    Monoprice's adapters have generally worked well for me, and they're also fairly inexpensive.

    I got one from amazon prime for $8 and it worked fine. Forget which one but it had 4+ stars and a large sample of reviews.
