My fingerprint reader has disappeared from the list of devices. I'm wondering if this might be a h/w problem?

Have you tried reinstalling the fingerprint reader software?

I never installed any software or drivers in the first place. Win 7 installed the driver itself and I used the MS fingerprint software.

Just tried using the Lenovo software. It installed fine, but when I try to enroll prints it says it can't find the sensor.

After installing the Lenovo software, Biometric Devices reappeared in Control Panel but it says it can't find any devices.

there are two brands of sensors used on ThinkPads: UPEK and Authentec.   if your software can't find the sensor then you may have installed the wrong version.

if you have an X200, X301, R400/R500, T400/T500, W500, or W700 then you have an Authentec.   newer and older systems than those all have UPEK.
