I'm thinking of putting my tv/monitor on my t61p with the lid closed. It's a 19" LCD with in-built tv-tuner. How much mass can the top of the t61p take?

There is no actual figure of how much weight it can take, but i guess it can support up to 80 kg for a short period of time (my friend stood on it to test the internal magnesium rollcage when we first got the T61p). But if you are going to put a large mass on the laptop for a prolonged period, there is a chance that the LCD may crack or develop artifacts after a while (i.e. pressure spot).

I think you should spend some money on a tv mount for your lcd, there is no point of risking it.

Probably not a great idea, I agree it does save ALOT of space, but you don't want to risk ruining your notebook's LCD.

Why don't you screw in some sort of bracket system on the bottom of the table and place the laptop there so it will be out of sight off the desktop and safe in its resting place.

Yes, I agree with everyone else.
Looking to mount an object on your laptop is just asking for trouble down the road.
Mount your screen on a wall, or somewhere besides on top of your Thinkpad.

Get one of those old laptop/monitor stands off ebay. IBM/Lenovo made them. One in my office has a P/N:22P5268. It will protect the laptop and raise your monitor about 4-6 inches.

    Hello Everyone,

I bought a T61p in jan-2008. I have sent this thinkpad to service centers for repair a couple of times, once for replacing the motherboard( the bios updater screwedup) and the other time for a broken LCD hinge. The service was excellent (they even sent me spare parts a couple of times like keyboard, touchpad etc).

A few months ago i spilled some beer on the keyboard, so immediately switched it off, opened the laptop and carefully cleaned everything. Switched it on, TADA it works as good as before.

A couple of months back i realized my warranty is about to expire so i though i would send the system for a final checkup. Now the guys at the service center tell me that there is a spill and to repair it i need accidental coverage which i don't have and cannot buy after the "accident". To repair it they asked for an advance of $800 - the laptop cost me around 1400,( new one on ebay around 400) it seemed to me that the cost of repair was too high. So they send me back my machine.

Now when i switch on my machine, i can see that the screen is active (if i look it at an angle i can see even different colors) but it is almost pitch black. I did some research, bought an inverter and lcd connection cords from lenovo and replaced the old one, no difference. Thought it must be the CCFL lamp, so bought a new lcd screen and replaced the existing one, still no difference. Frustrated, i removed the whole lcd from the hinge and connected my machine to an external monitor, this works perfectly.

My Question: Where is the problem, i replaced lcd, inverter, the connector cords. If there is problem with the graphics card the external monitor shouldn't work(i can even play games on it). Is there anything that can be done (a laptop is better than a converted desktop). Please share your expert thoughts, opinions and comments.

    Thanks,

    Elliot

Are you sure the small plug on the LCD to the inverter is put on the right way? It goes on both ways, but only works one way. I suggest this because I recently changed my screen, experienced what you describe, thought "oh boy, I messed it up now" but decided to see if the plug goes on a different way...turns out that was it.

The LCD to inverter only goes one way as it was designed. I couldn't force it. I figured the problem is with the inverter or ccfl (both of them new) because as i said i can see the display but its pitch black. Should i force the connection scraping the little bumps in the male plug???

Hmmm...I wouldn't. They must have made a change to the connector between the T60 and the T61.

I wonder if it could just be a bad cable or something.

Is there any way i can short the ccfl so that it is ON all the time. I did not find any ccfl or inverter problems in this forum on T61s. I posted this on Lenovo Forums a few months back, not even a single reply. I guess once you loose your warranty you are a nobody. May be if i replace the motherboard it would work, the motherboard costs around 150. So far i have spent around 200 for the new LCD, lcd cables, inverter. If i had know that a new one costs 400 it would have bought it.

That I do not know. Not that there aren't good minds here, but there are some other good minds forum.thinkpads.com, so it's worth posting there too.

As long as you're doing that, might as well get one with a different chip.

I almost spent $2000 on this machine (with hard drive and ram upgrades, bay adapter, replacement lcd with inverter and cable), i think i should stop now. I am using the laptop with external monitor now(my friend's spare in his office BTW), and i may have to move out soon. Do you guys have any suggestions for external monitors that are as slim as the laptop lcds or anykind that is small to carry and use or anything along those lines.

desktop LCD are not really that portable. You probably can have a look at the Sony OLED TV series, or one of those LCD monitors that uses USB input as video source.

    A do-it-yourself benchtable would cost you only 20-50 bucks, ;) . It's cheap, isn't it?

he wants a portable replacement benchtable laptop, basically he wants to carry the laptop around with a portable desktop LCD.
