They also differ in size, the mSATA installs in a spot under the k/b. Being that there are literally 3 places to install hard drives on the 520 I think the photos where warranted.

All that aside I have the model with on board raid and have found that even though I was installing to the mSATA drive I still had to load the drivers for the raid controller in order to get windows 7 to see the mSATA drive. Have you tried the "repair my installation" option by booting the installation disk and then selecting the latest drivers via website to USB stick?

THAT is an interesting question. I think the disk needs initing with Diskpart in order to be visible to utilities. I can put the Realcore in, boot a recovery DVD and run Diskpar the Select the disk and do a Clear All on it.. Then use the list command. If shows, the new disk is a wasted purchase which can be used for the new SAndy Bridge Extreme I will order in a couple of weeks. If it doesn't show the Realcore was a wasted purchase.

Well that's it. I have never seen a sign of the new SSD, again not even with diskpart. I have ordered a Samsung from Newegg and with a little luck it'll be here tomorrow.

Ummm AofI, I have never had an msata disk on this system.

    Let me summarize the thread:

    1. The initial question was about wanting to know if a 256GB+ mSATA disk was on the market because of the faulty Runcore SSD you have.
    2. You have given up on the Runcore SSD because it doesn't work.
    3. You have ordered a Samsung SSD.

If there are no outstanding questions, I would just let this thread die. If you have problems with the new Samsung, please start a new thread.

Agreed Thors, but just to finish it off incase anyone is looking for more info on mSATA and finds this post here is the info Renee was asking about.

There was originally a $350 option to order the W520 with an intel 80Gig mSATA boot drive but it was removed from the configuration page shortly before I ordered mine. If you look on page 75 (83 of the pdf file Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T520, T520i and W520) of the Hardware Maintenance Manual it shows the installation procedure, it goes in the PCI Express slot under the KB.

I don't know if any models acctualy shipped with it, bit I am running it as a boot drive and using two RAIDed 500gig Seagate hybrid drives for my data and it's running great. Not as great as two higher end SSD drives raided but still quick as a bunny.
