As I recall, the drive in the X4x series is differently shaped a normal 1.8" drive. If you look at the picture here, you'll see what I mean. I think I saw over on ThinkPads.com where you could make a drive using flash cards and an adapter.

If I remember right, I read about the Sony Vaio Z being able to do a RAID-0 between 2 SSDs by shedding the outside casing and stacking them on top of each other.

So maybe even if this is the case (X40 hard drive having a different shape), he might be able to do some 'modding' by taking off the outer shell of the SSD? Unlike a traditional mechanical drive, it's actually possible to do..

I've been looking this space for a long time as well. The clicking on my x41 drivers me mad!!!

Unfortunately because of the weired drive layout IBM used there aren't too many options apart from a CCF Card as you would find in Digital SLRs. I think this is best documented on a thread on thinkpad.com (I'm not allowed to paste the link, sorry)

I ended up going with an Addonics IDE to 2 CF slot adapter, going to use an 8gb Extreme III for XP, Office, and a few other apps and a 32gb CF for documents.

    Hi guys,

I know this is now a little bit out dated post but for anybody who wants to upgrade their x40 or x41 with SSD I've found KingSpec 64GB str8 form UK's ebay for 149£, it should turn up tomorrow. Nice, no need to wait week or two like form china and its cheaper. Once I've got it I'll post my benchmark results. I'm not sure if I can paste any links here. If not please remove it and I'm sorry in advance. Just want to help the others looking for a similar drive in UK.

I have a Kingspec 64GB SSD myself in my X41 tablet. I bought it from ebay too, but from a chinese seller. I thought to use a adapter card before, but there aren't many options for SSD drives. A good MTRON would have been way too expensive per GB (and also the hardware itself is a bit dated, so it would be like casting pearls before swine). A 32 GB MTRON would have cost more than what I paid for the X41 tablet on ebay, and I need the space.

My experience is good thus far, a really great performance boost from the slooow Hitachi drive. I have it in use for a month now. However, this drive uses the infamous JMicron controller and under Windows XP I got some "freezes" now and then for a few seconds under heavy drive usage.

BUT, I use Win 7 now since 3 weeks and this is no longer an issue for me. I benched the old and the new drive, may post pictures later. Under ATTO I get ~ 3,5MB/s write/read with 0.5k files and ~ 65 /40 MB/s write/read with 8MB files.

Compared to other SSDs this may not be this great, but it really is when you compare that to the sluggish Hitachi drive, which had maybe 1/4th the throughput.

So, I would not recommend the drive for XP users without restrictions. But with Win 7 this is a nice update.
