I've been feeling that my Laptop is slow . i recently heard abt Super PI Calculator and used it calculate upto 2M. The result in terms of time taken was 5 m 21s.. doesnt that show there is something wrong with my Laptop..

    Do you have spyware/adware protection?

If you haven't done so, try and run an adware scan and a virus scan. Free programs available from lavasoft (adaware) and AVG.

Also you might want to consider upgrading to 512MB Ram. 256 is rather little for win XP SP2

I don't see why storing information would in any way affect installing more ram. 256 MB is definitely way too little nowadays, especially if you use Windows XP. I have 512 MB, and looking at the task manager, I've peaked at over 800 MB commit charge (ram + virtual memory I guess) doing basic multitasking, which means that more ram would benefit even me. The pi calculation being slow also wouldn't affect day-to-day tasks, as the processor speed has quite little to do with it.

You could try Ad-Aware, Spybot and Microsoft has a new spyware program. These days you should have more than one. Make sure you virus definitions are up to date. You should also use an internet browser that is no Internet Explorer. I personally use FireFox, but there are others like Opera and Netscape.

oh sorry.. i was trying to say i just use my laptop to store lot of informations esp in Doc excel and PDF formats. and i run 2 applications at the max like a word and excel thas it.. i feel up0grading ram isnt worth it.

another thing is that the booting of my pc also takes over a 1min. i just want to know whether this is normal taken for a R 51 with intel centrino mobile technology @ 1.5ghz and 248 Mb ram.

Thank you so much for ur replies.

Yeah a boot time of over a minute is normal; I think mine takes at least that long too.

The thing that most determines the boot time is the hard drive. If you got a slow 4200RPM one, one minute is normal.

Longshot, but check the power saving settings on that machine. You might have is set on max battery or something where the processor is clocked way down, you could even have the speed stepping turned off. Try to plug your machine in and turn off all power saving, run super pi again to 2M and see if you get something in the 2 - 3 minute range.
