Since you've already made the purchase, you may wish to post this in the Lenovo forum, along with a more detailed description.

@amitface - this is probably the core2duo whine found in most notebooks with a core2. I have the whine as well.

@jianwux - this could very well be the problem with your laptop as well. Is it very high pitched? if it is, it's probably the processor making the whine while coming out of a certain sleep state. i don't think there's any moving component located on the left side of the laptop besides the fan. maybe something got stuck in the fan? :?

I would not be making statements like this.. Family owns 3 c2d notebooks and no whine.. do not know anyone personally who has it either..

Mine has buzzing when I run certain applications. I don't know where it's coming from but it's not loud. The fan and HDD is louder. I have to put my ear next to the keyboard to really hear it.

I have a T7300 and it doesn't have any whine.

I have yet to hear a whine from my T8300. Actually, I have yet to hear hardly anything from my T61 --it's literally the quietest notebook I've ever owned.

EDIT: Since the noise is coming from the left side, might there be a possibility that the CPU cooling fan is unbalanced (which would mean a defect if it were the case)? That could create such a noise. I believe the fan is on the left side for 15" models.

I couldn't agree more. I've got the T9300 and it is by far better noise-wise than anything HP has. I've used HP DV2000T's, DV6000T, DV6500T, DV6700T, and DV9700T and those have nothing as far as design from cooling to asthetics on the Lenovo's. I've also used Asus and Dell Latitudes and think they are mostly built better than the HP's.

i am not sure if it is the CPU. most likely it could be your HD. hey you know something just to be on the safe side call IBM up and send in your laptop for a check up. one of my friends sent in his laptop and got it back in like 4 days. they are really quick

i have a thinkpad t61- intel core2 duo and i have no problem what so ever. this laptop is like a beast. it handles everything that i throw at it.

not sure it'd be on the hdd since the hdds are located on the right side of the computer....

Interesting that we haven't heard a response from our original poster...and that this post was originally made in the "What should I buy?" forum. Also, it was their first post, and none have been made since.

This is starting to seem more and more like bait to me, less and less like really asking for advice.
