oh i made a grammar mistake. i mean the title.

    My T61 runs very slow

    here is my spec

    core 2 duo 7300
    1gb
    120gb 5400rpm
    intel gma x3100

first of all , i'm not good in english so please understand any inconvinience

    I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED..!!

vista runs very slow on my t61. i didn't expect this slow performance i expected this laptop to be at least better than my old laptop.i just feel like using my old pentium 3 4 i had like three four years ago.seriously it's even slow than that.

Do you guys think i should use xp to get a better performance.
or get a another 1GB stick of ram.

well, but i know that the ram would'nt help that much . i know some people who have upgraded their ram and didn't get that much difference in terms of performance.

So i think i should install XP. but how do I? i'm really a begginer in computer and i don't know how to install it. Even if i know, where would i find the xp CD.

help me please. i need you guys help

Try doing a fresh install. There are many guides here in this forum on how to do it.

The preload of Vista is a bit slow IMO and it is much better after a clean install :)

Number of processes can vary depending on what ThinkVantage utilities you installed. 90 is certainly reachable if you installed all of them. Check my ThinkVantage software guide for more details on which ones you want or don't want.

As for the amount of hard drive space left, 89GB is normal. Assuming your brother-in-law didn't delete your recovery partition, 93% (after formatting) of 120GB is 112GB. After accounting for the recovery partition, you should have 107GB of usable space. 18GB is not unheard for a ThinkPad clean install if, again, you have ThinkVantage stuff set up.

So yes, install more RAM. 2GB is ideal. 1GB is only minimum for Vista Premium. Also, do a clean install from the guide in my sig to make sure you don't do anything unnecessary. After that, your computer should speed up quite a bit.

Also defragment your hard drive which will also automatically index your files so those things don't happen while you're using your computer.

How long have you been using the system? If you are noticing the hard drive being constantly accessed, then this is normal for the first couple of days as Vista is indexing the hard drive. You could leave the system on overnight to let it complete the indexing or turn it off completely if you don't like it.

Try to use it normally as you would for a week for the Superfetch to catch up to your preferences, as it will learn which programs you use and cache them in memory for faster access. This is why you will typically see high memory usage under Vista over XP, but it is worth it imo.

It is the first day for me using it. but my brother-in law received it and had it for 1week and did the clean install for me.So it has been used for 1week.

Search in the Start Menu. Alternatively, press the ThinkVantage button and look in there.

Some people like diskeeper because it defragments the hard drive much faster than Vista does. I personally don't care, but that decision is yours.

I have 48 processes after clean install, with AVG and Zone alarm. Didnt bother with Thinkvantage software, I just use the RSS feed.

1gb of ram is the culprit. diskeeper is an excellent piece of software.

I have 2gb with Vista, and my memory usage is 43% at idle. I did a clean install but still have ~80 processes running. I think 1gb on Vista would be crazy slow.

I have always found that Nortons slows down my PC. First thing I did when I got my T61 is uninstall it.

AVG's free virus scanner is ideal for me.

Actually, the newest version of Norton isn't bloated anymore. They've streamlined everything and the program is surprisingly much better to use. However, still doesn't beat free.

Many people like AVG or Avast! antivirus. I personally use Avast!.
