My R40's fan recently crapped out, so I replaced it and the new one wouldn't work, either. It took updating the Embedded Controller drivers, reflashing the BIOS (which wasn't needed), and some fresh AS5 to get the fan going. But it still doesn't work as often or aggressively as it should. I'm comparing it to the "old days." My notebook is burning up! I am wishing I had everyone else's too-much-fan problem. ;)

I installed NHC and -- guess what, the fan stopped completely! (The temps on my HD were 55, but I think the program or the sensors can't accurately read any higher. No question it is hotter than that! The CPU ranged from 55-60.) So I uninstalled NHC and the fan came back, but lamely again.

As I type, I could fry an egg on my HD. It's ridiculous. IBM tech support says there is no innate way for the Thinkpad or XP to control the fan. SpeedFan doesn't work, either -- I tried it and couldn't get it to do anything to the fan. What's with my notebook not cooperating with these programs?

If anyone has any ideas on how to get my fan online again, I would love to hear them. This old thing has to last a while longer. (Saving for a T61 or MBP...)

If you're willing to mod the notebook, and it's a 5V fan, you could get 5V from the USB port... I've seen this done before on the Acer forum here... though that's overkill :)

You're fan isn't spinning as fast because it's on it's last legs. Why not get order a new one?
