Most likely the hinges just weren't tightened as much as they needed to be. Consider yourself lucky...it could have been tightened too much, and you wouldn't have known about it until your hinge covers started cracking.

You can download a service manual from:
    ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/42x3545_01.pdf

Just remove the hinge covers, tighten the screws on the hinges enough that it doesn't wobble (just don't tighten it so much that it makes it hard to open or close the lid, because that could lead to cracked hinge covers), and put the hinge covers back on.

    The lid is very tight.

I"m talking about where the hinges meet the body. that wobbles.

You may still want to check the screws in that area...the hinges may not have been secured to the notebook firmly enough, though that's pretty rare.

The mounting screws on my T61p were loose, but after tightening, the LCD hinges have no play.

If the external screws could be loose, makes me wonder sometimes if they missed the QC on the more important screws ie screws on the heatsink etc. I read about hi temps and I wonder if in some cases that could be the problem.
    And those requires depot/onsite repairs.

Guess I would know if get abnormal temps but usually those symptoms manifest almost immediately upon receiving the unit. I like the thinkpad design but I think the assembly/QC could be better...

There are occasional notebooks from every manufacturer that come with a couple of screws that are either a bit too tight or a bit too loose. I've never seen this on critical components, though. Generally, it's the shell, where having it a little loose creates wobble like the OP has, and having it too tight puts excess stress on the hinge covers/LCD casing, leading to cracks over time.

Mine was exactly the same. There are 2 small screws under the left hinge, just tighten them up a bit until the looseness goes.

No need to remove keyboard, the screws are directly under the hinge.

Hey you were right, it was loose... And i know why, the 1st service guy that came over to replace my fan and heat sink unscrewed ALL the screws from the back. I remember i was really upset that he did that.

(He spend an additional 15 minutes figuring which screws go where because he didn't just follow the maintenance procedure)

    Thanks a bunch :)
