This is the first update to my first thoughts to my X61. I've not yet actually recieved it yet. I came home and i found a UPS notice saying they needed my signature. Thats to be expected. However, UPS doesn't deliver on saturdays, so i have to wait until Monday. Here begins the slowest three days of my life.

I heard somewhere that UPS makes second rounds and delivers until 8pm or so. Hopefully this is true.

No UPS truck. I'll have to wait until Monday. I'm going to have them give it to a neighbor i guess.

    10 December 2007- 7:12pm
I received my x61 about one and a half hours ago. I'm typing this post on it. I'll be busy tonight, but expect first thoughts tommorow. I have added my unboxing thoughts.

This thread will be updated. This first post will be about shipping and arrival and such. The second post will be actual first thoughts and unboxing

    Unboxing

The package came at about 5:45. This was UPS' second delivery attempt. I had left them a message saying to either try again or deliver to a neighbor's house. I guess they decided to try again.

The package was unusually light, which I guess reflects upon the contents, no? It was also relatively unreinforced. On the outside. The inside, however, was a completely different story. The x61 was held by two styrofoam holding mechanisms (best name i can come up with). It was also securtiy sealed, but other than that, there was very little internal protection. In another box was the power cord and the usual documentation.

There was one little problem, however. The external ziploc bag that holds a manifest of the contents and such was somewhat damaged. The bottom seam had half-way opened. I didn't even realize that it was a ziploc until i had opened the bottom seam to get into the contents. This may or may not be Lenovo's fault, but it probably isn't.

First Thoughts to come later, after I get some more experience with it.

He could have actually gone to UPS between 5PM-7PM. All the trucks are supposed to be back by then. Don't even need to call. I've done that a couple times.

im not sure what the pink notice is, but if you got one of those brown and yellow info-notices you could go pick it up. They might even let you pick it up today.

As far as I know, Lenovo requires the package to be delivered at your house with a signature. They will not allow you to drive to UPS and pick it up yourself. I had the same thing happen to me when I was waiting for my X61s. Luckily, the UPS delivery guy made a second delivery attempt the same day.

eh ok. good thing i didn't even try (as you see, sometimes it pays to be lazy)

I'll write on the comment section to either try to deliver it after when i get home or leave it with a neighbor.

Funny thing though, the UPS used to do second runs. what changed?

If you call Lenovo after the attempted delivery, they will "unlock" the package and allow UPS to give it to you at the counter.

I've done this about 4 times for accessories. Very annoying but it works.

I picked up my X61T from the UPS Center, you have to show your ID and then sign for it. I am not sure what this "unlock" process is. I did not have to call Lenovo at all

Generally if you call and try to schedule an item for pickup/same day will call, UPS will try to mark it as such and get blocked by their own system. If you call Lenovo and request they release it, they will in turn call UPS. Then you have to call back and set up the pickup.

I haven't done it since early summer so perhaps they have abandoned this idiotic process.
