Well, I was so excited to see that my new T61 has shipped, that I figured I would make a post here lol. I ordered my T61 about three days ago, and Lenovo has just sent me an E-mail stating my laptop has been shipped !! I choose UPS ground, so I wonder how long shipping will take (I have not been given a tracking number as of yet). My guess is a week or so. Nevertheless, I am so excited, I can't wait to get it ! I ordered it with the following options :

Also, I was wondering, did I order this with the new Penryn that everyone is talking about ?? I've searched the Penryn Processors, and saw the T8300 was one of them, so I'm assuming I did.
Anyway, just figured I'd share my happiness :) What do you guys think ? I was looking for a quality built laptop that will last me for years to come, and this is my first ever Thinkpad :)

Yes, you did order it with the Penryn inside.

Looks like a nicely configured laptop. Good choice on the hard drive.

Here's to hoping you get it quickly enough!

    Thank you :)

I've seen the T60 and R61 models at my local Circuit City, and just the feel of them impressed me, I instantly said "I have to have one" lol. Of course, the ones at those retail stores the prices were through the roof, and I figured it would cheaper just to order one straight through the Lenovo website. My HP was only $1027 shipped to my door, but I figured if I just spent the extra $400 and went with a far superior build quality of a computer, as well as a much better processor (my dv6700t came with the T5450), this would save me from buying a new laptop every 2 - 4 years. So I figured the price would make up for itself in the long run. With the superior quality, and added roll cages even if I do accidentally drop the computer, with a normal common laptop, it would more then likely be toast, but with the Thinkpad, it will keep on going without missing a beat :) Not that I will be throwing it around all the time :). Besides doing a clean install of Vista, do you recommend anything for the new computer ?? I already bought a Wireless mouse (Logitech V450). The only other item I may need eventually would be a web-cam. Maybe some screen cleaner and I'm good to go :)

Congrats--that's great news to hear! I hope it gets to you soon.

You'll love having a ThinkPad. I just ordered a T61, which will be my third ThinkPad (R31, R40). My wife has a T42 and I've always thought it was much nicer than my previous budget R-series.

Apparently, the shipping times have really improved. I ordered mine on the 15th (Friday) and it shipped on the 19th, with an estimated delivery of Feb. 21. And I just got the free shipping (apparently, UPS Express, which really surprised me).

I ordered another 2GB Crucial stick from ClubIT.com which should come on the 22nd. I've also got Vista x64 Business that I'll be installing, so that's why I ordered Vista Basic.

This weekend should be fun! :)

Congratulations ! I too was surprised to find that my package has also been shipped by UPS Express. Right now it's in KR (My guess Korea) somewhere, and has just got the departure scan from there. It didn't give me an estimated delivery date, so I would assume it would be just a few days (Friday the latest). This is so cool, I can't wait to get it !!!
Also, msmcougar, we had the same build, and same ship dates !

I just recently got a T61. It was shipped to my house by UPS express in 2 days with a snow storm! I was very impressed. I haven't even opened it and it is still sitting in the box, believe it or not. I am so damn indecisive that I already have it on ebay(my seller name is virtualnan) for sale so I can configure a different one!

Yeah, thanks. I'm really impressed with the shipping. I'm also hoping that this T61 lasts a while. Along with MikesDell I'll post some reactions and info when it comes.

I've got another 2GB of memory arriving Friday for it and then this weekend I'll get Vista Business 64 installed (thanks to everyone for the clean install recommendations on the other posts). Are there any special tips for doing a clean install besides making recovery CDs, and copying the preinstalled software folder to a separate drive?

There are a couple of good guides here that you might have already heard of :

Stallen's Clean Install Guide for Vista

Orev's Vendor Neutral Vista Clean Install

Stallen's guide is intended for ppl who want a clean install on their factory drive. In my case I did a fresh install on an aftermarket drive (Hitachi 200gb) and refered to that guide because it contains very good reference points for Thinkpad drivers that I'll need for my Vista installation. Highly recomended for anyone contemplating a fresh or clean Vista install on their Thinkpad.

Well, my T61 arrived early this AM, and I must say, I LOVE IT !!! This is by far the best computer I have ever owned ! Very durable, screen is excellent, no glare at all whatsoever, and the volume is decent. This computer is everything I have ever asked for in a notebook. I am also glad I went with the 15.4 inch monitor size as well. Fits my needs perfectly. The trackpoint is unbelievable ! I find that I'm using the trackpoint more then the touchpad or the mouse lol The T61 I find is very quiet, and far outperformed my HP dv6700t. My only thing is, and I'm sure a lot of you guys have experienced the same thing, is on the palmrests, my hands are a little sweaty, and the palmrests show a little more like "moist black" where my palms were. Any idea on how to keep that from happening, or how to get rid if that ? Other then that VERY minor palmrest - sweat thing, this thing is perfact ! Not a one complaint. I swear, i will never order anything but Thinkpads from now on ! Super fast shipping, great product, and super service (at least from my experiences. If anyone is thinking about pulling the trigger to get a Thinkpad, I defiantly think you should spend the extra money, and order one, as they are worth every penny ! Now, let's see. . . . .hmmmm . . . .how to test out the added roll cage in the display . . . lol :) :)

    Congrats!

I received my similarly configured T61 on Tuesday!

I have never had a quality notebook, and from what I've read I'll be happy with this one for a long time.

Clean Vista install is planned for this weekend. Outside of the bloat, I'm tickled with this thing! Build quality is everything I expected and more.

My neighbor was astounded that I picked up a new Penryn! The T8300 should suit my needs, which for the moment only include some light programming for school. Overall I'm just as tickled as you are!

I'm sorry if this question is slightly off-topic and basic, but what is this Penryn stuff that everyone is talking about? I only found the forum yesterday, and I have read many posts that mention Penryn but don't say what it is. Can anyone help me with some information?

The "Penryn" name refers to Intel's latest version of the Core 2 Duo processor. These processors are the first to be fabricated using the 45nm process, which means that they are smaller, faster, cooler, and use less energy than previous Core 2 Duo processors. This results in increased performance and better energy efficiency = longer battery. Until now all Core 2 Duo processors were built using the 65nm process. Many are surprised that ThinkPads have included these codename "Penryn" processors so soon. I also just got a new T61 with the T8300 and it is very, very fast and the bottom of the laptop *never* gets hot. At most, it gets a little warmer than room temp. It's absolutely amazing. I highly recommend these processors!

More details about the code-name "Penryn" processors can be found all over the web. Here are some details:

    FAQ from Intel: http://softwarecommunity.intel.com/articles/eng/1247.htm

I agree with the above post. Compared to a T5450 processor I had on a HP dv6700t, which was almost always warm/hot, this laptop is cool as a breeze. I defiantly have noticed the difference in performance, and most definitely, the temperature differences. This laptop simply does not get hot. (I have the T8300).

FYI, you gentlemen might want to keep checking back in at lenovo.com and see if the price drops. Lenovo offers a 21 day price match. Saved me $300.

lol , I was just going to reply to this thread, and say the same thing ! I just called the Lenovo CS number (866-428-4465), and got a price quote, and that saved me almost $300 on my T61 !! So, by all means, if you ordered a T61 a week ago or so, go back in, and configure a system exactly the way you ordered it, and you will see how much you will save. It also sucks, because for the amount I payed ($1449) I could've gotten a T61p for that amount. Oh well, I love my computer, and I would not want to go through all that anyway just to get a better graphics card when I don't even play any games anyway lol.
All in all, that call made my day :)
