Sorry about this... pretty sure I read this post somewhere else, but I can't seem to find it now.

I did a fresh install of XP, and every time I boot, the new hardware wizard trys to install a "PCI Device." It fails every time, but I am unable to disable the device. Anybody know what it is? I currently have a "PCI memory controller" disabled (turbo memory I assume), as well as an "unknown device" disabled. Everything on the computer seems to work fine. Any ideas?

In the device manager, under the "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" branch, there is a "PCI device" listed. This was giving me grief earlier, and I think it may be related to the one that I can't get rid of. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Why did you disable those?

Anyway, right click on the unidentified ones, and under properties, it may show a proper name on the General tab. Can give you a hint of which drivers you need to install, at least.

I disabled the PCI memory controller because I can't use it under XP.
I disabled the unknown device because I can't figure out what it is and everything seems to work :)

At this point I thought I was done. I was happy with my install.

This newest "PCI device" only appeared when I installed the necessary drivers to switch from "compatibility" mode to ACPI under the bios. The device lists under the "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" branch in the device manager and has an exclamation mark indicating it's not working properly. There is no indication as to what it might be. Beside "device type" it says it's an IDE ATA/ATAPI controller. Since it's under the ide controllers list, I thought maybe it has something to do with the turbo mem as well...?

As I said, open properties for the ones that aren't identified, and check under the General tab. It often shows a more detailed name there.

And if you disable random devices, that might just explain why others don't work. I don't know why "PCI memory controller" shouldn't work on XP, but hey, if you say so, I assume you've checked up on it, and are sure that disabling it in device manager is the only thing to do.

But the other one? Why don't you just find out which driver it needs?

    ASaringer,
I have the same issue on a t61p; I get a "found new hardware" window on each startup saying it's found a "PCI Device"; the only "PCI Device" listing I see is an IDE ATA/ATAPI controller...

Any success in resolving the issue?

The drivers that potrero meant to link fixed my problem as well.
