This may not pertain to only Thinkpads--or maybe it does! but it's problem with my thinkpad so I post it here...

It is a strange thing: when I plugged external speakers to my thinkpad, with the thinkpad speaker turned off, but the external speakers turned on, I heard constant noises from the speakers. When I got close, I heard that was some radio channel! There were people speaking and songs, music... It only goes away if I turn off the external speakers.

It doesn't happen if I turn on only the thinkpad speakers but not the external speakers.

Also doesn't happen if the speakers are not plugged into the thinkpad, even if turned on. So it looks like inside the Thinkpad there's some kind of radio??

What the heck is going on? This is Logitech speakers, very cheaply bought.

what speakers are we talking about here, i.e. model and brand. I think the problem is more to do with speakers then the laptop.

    Logitech S120 2.0 Multimedia Speakers.

(but, as I said, it has radio noise only if plugged to the Thinkpad  )

Because the cables are acting as antennas, probably. I had this happen with some Cambridge Soundworks way back in the day. I caught some rather interesting AM waves. Interesting in that they originated a few thousand miles away. Where are yours coming from, can you make anything out?

Cover the speaker wires with foil or something.

lol I've had the same thing happen to me with the Cambridge Soundworks. I guess they should have mentioned it in the package: speakers/radio combo :D

I don't know where it came from. Right now, it's just static noises, no talking/music  But yesterday and other times, it was really clearly a channel, sounded even like a popular one :)

I just turn off the speakers.

At least in future I can sell my speakers mentioning the radio function :D

This is pretty common. I've gotten radio stations with Altec Lansing speakers and get to hear my wireless card transmitting sometimes. It can be pretty annoying at times. Apparently many speakers are terribly shielded. Try moving the cables around and moving any electronics right nearby.

Probably that's pay-per-listen and what you're doing is illegal and they'll come any second now, kick in your door, taser you a bit and put you in a hole on a remote island. :D
