Are you planning internal or external? Cause if you are planning internal, you may have some issues with making it fit. There notch in the lower right corner for the eject mechanism that the other drives will not have. It may be possible to swap the bezels depending on your skill level. Firmware can sometimes be a problem as well. That said, I personally think there are no better laptop burners than NEC. The Teac is a rebadged LG GMA-4080N. There are some 4x burners on ebay for around $120, 8x for around $180. You can buy an OEM version of the IBM drive here, no dual layer though:

It is refurbed. The new one goes for $225. Good Luck.

    Hi zazonz,

I plan to have an internal one that fit the Ultrabay 2000. I think I will forget about the Teac one as you mention that it is actually a LG unit.

A few months ago I actually saw someone selling modified NEC 6500 that can fit T and other series on ebay. The asking price is not cheap and I was hesitating to make the purchase. Well, the seller is gone now and I think now my only choice is the external unit. :(

    Any other suggestion?

    zazona,

I have 4X desktop DVDRW and I am not too happy with the speed until 8X/16X burner becomes available. (My experience: Pioneer A06 - Pioneer A07 - Pioneer A09 - NEC 3250A)

I am hoping the seller whoever makes NEC6500A fit T series can sell the driver again....

Any external options available in the market?

You can buy the 6500 which has now been upgraded to the 6650 and then get an external case. The 6650 runs about $100 on NewEgg. You can get a case on ebay for like $20. That is what I have. I leave the battery in the bay. Good Luck.

I have an NEC 6500 that I use in the Ultrabay slot of a T23.
You need to remove the back connector and the rails from an existing ultrabay drive to put on the NEC 6500.

You will also need to cut a notch from the lower right hand corner of the bezel to make it fit into the Ultrabay slot. The plastic is relatively soft, so it can be easily cut with an exacto knife.

Once all that is done, then it is just plug and play. You may need a newer version of burning software to work with the drive though. I had to upgrade to Nero 6.

zazona: What is the case you talk about for $20? Do you have a link for that?

mysbca: Great to hear that 6500A works with T23! Are you able to take a photo and send to my email address? Since I do not have 6500A besides me I barely have an idea of the modification you mention. My address is qqsaki at yahoo dot com. Really apprecaite your help!

I don't have my drive with me. The 6500A bezel (faceplate) is rectangular. If you look at your current Ultrabay drive, the front faceplate has a notch at the lower right corner for the drive pullout lever to come out. You just need to make a similar notch on the 6500A faceplate.

After I did fresh install of Windows, I had to update usb drivers using Windows update to get 2.0.
