i think that question doesn't belong to the Thinkpad section.

The only difference between these two models is the monitor calibrator solution (SpectraViewII Color Calibration Solution).

    HI lead_org,

I just had to see if someone with a ThinkPad, had a NEC, which forum should I post this question in…
    <O :p</O :p
    <O :p</O :p
They both come with the SpectraViewII Color Calibration Solution Software, I think the PA241W-BK-SV comes with the meter…<O :p</O :p

Erik the moderator, is the only person i know that uses professional grade NEC LCD (30 inch model).

I use U2410 mainly, it is okay as an H-IPS, but the quality of the picture is definitely better on previous Dell S-IPS LCD (mainly Dell 2007FP and 2007WFP). NEC LCD is even better.

their panels are identical (p-IPS), the different is only the SpectraViewII Color Calibration Solution.

As for professional uses, of course you'll need a calibrator, but if you already had one, then go for PA241W-BK. In case you don't have any, or you prefer the SpectraViewII Color Calibration, then consider the SV edition

not sure i can elaborate much on my display.   colors are accurate out of the box and didn't change much at all with calibration.   white and gray backgrounds are uniform.   black only shows minor bleeding under the right conditions but i've never once found it to be an issue.

the only changes i made were to set the LED to illuminate green (it's set blue from the factory) and disable the auto brightness function.   for whatever reason, i've never had good luck with auto brightness as it ends up flickering under certain conditions.

interesting that you find S-IPS better than H-IPS.   H-IPS is regarded in the industry to be superior in viewing angle, contrast, color depth, and lack of sparkle, plus S-IPS is older technology.   the 3090WQXi i own is based on an LG H-IPS panel and still remains one of the best 30" panels available.   P-IPS is even better.

Yes that's strange. I went from some Sony TN->Dell S-IPS. Then to the NEC 2490WUXi. The H-IPS for me was almost as big of a jump in quality as from TN->S-IPS

@Erik, this is probably due to the fact that the U2410 uses a cheaper version of H-IPS as compared to the one found in NEC monitors. There are lots of reported image quality problems (many users were comparing it to more expensive NEC IPS LCD).

are there pictures of Dell's vs NEC's monitors side by side. I really want to see what make NEC's monitor so much more expensive.

a side-by-side photo wouldn't be a fair comparison for either monitor since one could be set incorrectly to make the other look better.

what makes NEC displays more expensive is accurate color and a collective of specific features for pro use.   they're primarily intended as a tool for graphics, ID, and print professionals -- not for watching movies or playing games.   this is akin to comparing a netbook with a workstation and asking why one is more expensive simply because they're both computers.

    it's a tool, not a toy. ;)

    Hi erik,
    <O:p</O:p
I am leaning on the PA241W-BK-SV side. I am waiting for a Quote on two of this bad boys…
    <O:p</O:p
I was wandering which NEC do you have, do you have two of them and are you using the Display port or DVI. What did you use to calibrate your NEC?
    <O:p</O:p
I think I will change the LED to illuminate to green two; this is one of many sweet options that I like

TFT Central has a nice right up on the NEC PA241W and some of the options

    spendy but sweeet... ;)

the NEC LCD that Erik uses, is in his signature.

    NEC 3090WQXi

Top notch stuff... RRP of 2199 dollars when it first came out... only professional would use them.

That is very good price for a 30 inch monitor that come out three years ago, considering the just released U3011 is nearly $2000

mine is a 29.8" LCD3090WQXi-BK.   it was purchased about 2.5 years ago.   it's DVI-D @ 2560x1600 plus a second DVI-I input capable of connecting to digital (1920x1200 max) or analog (2048x1536 max).   the DVI-I port is useful for connecting VGA-only ThinkPads in a pinch.

my calibrator is an old Gretag Macbeth (now X-Rite) setup equivalent to the current i1Basic.   color proofing isn't part of my workflow anymore so it'll probably get sold in favor of the NEC SpectraView II setup.   it would make a lot more sense.
