I've had my T61P for almost three years now with no hardware issues. I had the laptop plugged in to the AC adapter while using it on the couch. Sat it down and got up to do something and when I came back it was off. The battery is almost shot so that's why it was plugged in. I thought maybe it wasn't charging and just ran the battery dead. AC adapter was plugged in and seems fine (checked voltage with a multi-meter). When plugged in the charging indicator on the laptop is off (usually would light up when plugged in). Tried my other battery and still nothing. It's acting like it won't take power or something (internal power supply issue?). I know nothing about laptop hardware and thought I would start here before bringing in for repair. Thanks.

Take out the hard drive, memory, battery, optical drive and wifi card. Hit the power button 10 times for a second, then one last time for 30 seconds. Plug the AC in and hit the power button. If the board doesn't beep, it's likely dead. If it does beep replace the items one at a time to see if you can find the culprit. Good Luck.

Well she's back up and running! I took everything out but the wi-fi card as I wasn't sure where it was at. Followed the power button procedure then plugged it in and powered it up. It beep a few times with some shorter/longer beeps then sat there. Shut it off by unplugging it then placed the parts in one at a time starting with the battery (which is taking charge) until I had all the parts back in and the machine started up normally. Everything seems to be running fine and I did take notice that the time/date are correct so I'm assuming they CMOS battery is working fine. Thanks a million for helping out! Any ideas on what would have caused the problem in the first place?

More likely this is the symptom of something that really is going to fail. Those beeps are diagnostic codes (I think). I don't think you get beeps for any of those removable components except maybe the memory sticks.

Well, your right about the beeps. I didn't see those.

Describe the beeps as far as long and short and sequence are corncerned.

I don't think that's necessarily true. The board should beep if there's no memory in it. It's a sign that it's working. As to the why, I don't have a clue. Sometimes re-seating fixes things.
