My friend purchased IBM from China, she only got notebook without software. Store people where she bought it installed all the software, but didn't give her any CDs, including Chinese XP. She bought US version of Windows XPP, and I tried to install it.(Right now she has 2 operating systems on computer). It has 3 partitions and one partition can't be formated. Can anyone tell me, how to format the HD? I want to delete all partitions and create just one. Help me plez. I've been formating HDs on HPs, Dells and Acer, but I can't figure out what to do with IBM.
Thanks for help

Does this have a floppy drive? If it does you could make Windows boot disk, boot into DOS, delete and format partitions. If it doesn't have a floppy, you can make a boot CD with Nero and do the same. Is the partition you can't format the recovery partition? If it is you can go into the BIOS and turn it off meaning you'll be able to see the whole disk. I think it is under security in the BIOS, at least it was on mine. Good Luck.

Can you explain how to format it with boot CD? Any websites that tell all the steps? I am not sure if its recovery partition, but I know that its a system partition, where the old operating system is located.

You are going to have to make a boot CD first. Download the file here, I would suggest Windows 98 or ME as 95 doesn't support the CD-ROM in DOS:
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
Put a floppy in the A: drive. Open the program and let it do its thing. After it is done, leave the floppy in and open Nero. On the New Compilation box, select boot cd. Hit New and then Burn. You don't have to put any files on the CD, it is going to take them from the floppy. When it is done you'll have a Boot CD. Put the boot CD in the laptop and turn it on. You may have to change the boot order so it will look to the CD before the hard drive. On my T41, I hit Enter and it goes to the BIOS screen. Yours may be different. After it reads for a minute, you'll come to a screen asking you if you want to boot to dos with cd support, without cd support etc. Select with CD support. After it is done, you should be at the A: prompt. Type fdisk. It will ask you some questions, just say yes. After you finish, you'll be at a screen with four choices:
Create Primary DOS Partition
Create Extended or Logical Partition
Delete Partition
View Parition Information
You may want to select View Partition Information just to see what is on there. If the partition you can't delete is the recovery partition, you won't be able to see it until you turn it off in the BIOS. Select Delete partition. Again you'll have four choices:
Delete Primary DOS partition
Delete Extended Partition
Delete Logical Partition
Delete non-DOS Partition
If the partition is NTFS, select four and delete. Say yes and type in the volume label. Being that it is XP, my guess is that it is NTFS. If it is not NTFS, you'll have to select one two or three dependin on what type of partitions are one there. Select one of them until it starts to let you deleting them. Keep trying until they are all gone. You can create new partitions and the go back to the A: to format the drive, but you going to have to do that when you install XP. I'd skip that step. Once you delete the partition all the info is gone anyway. Turn off the machine. Put in the XP CD and install. Good Luck.
