My current setup on Lenovo T430 is
i7-3720qm, intel hd 4000, 16gb 1600mhz RAM, 128gb msata ssd + 256gb main bay ssd + 240gb optical bay ssd and Intel 6205 wifi card and 1600 x 900 screen
With careful monitoring, the system is very stable for the time being(Power and Thermal wise), I had to ditch the 65W power supply, because it no longer charges the laptop when plugged in.
Now, I got greedy and made a deal and am now waiting for a T430 with NVS 5400M. I am intending to move all the good parts over to this one. There are several factors:
1. Power consumption. i7-3720qm eats 45w, NVS 5400M eats 25W, and my Power supplies are 90w. so 20W dedicated to peripherals?
Is this good enough?
2. Heating. To keep CPU under 50 deg Celsius, I had to do a lot of modding which can be kept in the programming from transferring drives, but I am now reading that with i7-3720qm, the cooling system cannot handle this.
Has anyone has had a setup like this?
I should mention, I do a lot of programming on Linux side, I intend to keep NVS off using bumblebee on linux side.
I am also using higher(?) end CAD, Autodesk Inventor 2018. After reading quite a bit NVS would be a great asset for me.
Is this even recommended? I read in Lenovo Forums that this is not recommended

Well, I have the setup.
The laptop has so far crashed twice. Both times during battery reset, because I also have 2 new batteries with the new laptop where I installed all the parts.
Interesting fact: The laptop now has power issues and possibly thermal issues.
Everything even at idle runs 10 deg Celsius higher than before. Idle was ~ 40 Deg Celsius, load was ~70 Deg Celsius,
now without external cooling, ~50Deg Celsius on idle, ~80, flashing to ~95 Deg Celsius on load.
External fans cool things down the extra 10 Deg Celsius.
When i went from i5-3320m -> i7-3720qm the 65W brick didn't do the work.
On i7-3720QM, the 90W as stable
On i7-3720QM + NVS 5400m 1GB, the 90W is stable independently, as far as battery is at above 7% power
On i7-3720QM + NVS 5400m 1GB + Docking bay, the 90W is not good enough.
Parts of USB ports do not work properly, the external USB drives do not work/ if they do work, the external monitor turns blue... literally.
At my office, I have a 170W brick, which should do the trick with the docking bay, but I wish to rule out MB issues.
As for temperature, with stock fan, when I push it, it reaches over 80 Deg Celsius, but holds, does not go up. With modified Opolar cooling fan(air sucking fan for the vents), and Targus cooling mat, temperature floats around 60 Deg Celsius.
In terms of CAD work, NVS 5400m is at least twice better than the HD 4000, the anti-aliasing, and lagging is gone completely.
In terms of gaming, the lagging is gone, but there was a crash when I pushed the laptop on stock fans, and "high" settings on some of nicer games, the laptop crashed. It is either thermal or more likely power limit, because the temperature was 90 deg Celsius, and this was during a battery reset, and battery was at 6%.
I am still testing things, My attempt to get Optimus Bumblebee on Linux side was a failure, then again I am going with un-supported OpenSUSE 13.2 KDE, I will upgrade to LEAP eventually, and I'll give it a fair test. The lm-sensors do not detect the GPU temperature though, but I have the fans to run at pretty much at 80% on idle, and 100% on load, so I'm doing the best I can to keep it cool. -
After more testing, I think something is a bit off on the MB + Power. I think the MB docking station port is damaged somehow, the laptop refused to boot twice last night.

Weird fact. The 90W is very well obviously not supplying what the laptop needs, and with the OEM 6 cell battery, the battery drains as the computer is plugged into a 90W when on heavy load.
This battery drains about 1% per 10 minutes while plugged, and playing a heavy computer game.
With the battery not at over 90% there is also a chance that the computer won't even boot initially.
Funny fact, with the 9 cell battery, 1% loss per 20 minutes, while plugged and playing a heavy computer game, and there has not yet been a power-related crash/fail to boot.
Same thing when I plug it into a 170W brick. When the docking bay is powered by a 135W brick, the power failure still occurs once a while.
I also had a thermal-crash when I was pushing for details on a computer game, and the temperature rose over 100degC.
There is a reason why T530 or W530 only comes with 9 cell battery!
Now, the ambitious project is on its way, using the expresscard eGPU, if successful my alienware X51R2 will be history!
