When I first received my t61p about 2 months ago I had a faulty hard drive (120gb 5400 rpm). I called IBM SERV and they sent over a replacement hard drive...and I thought that was pretty much the end of the matter. Until today when I reveived an invoice from IBM billing me $160!!! At first I was furious since I assumed that I was being billed for something which I was entitled too since my computer is under warranty. However upon reopening the box the hard drive came in I came upon a note which I had neglected to read earlier, namely that I was supposed to send the defective harddrive back.

Thus now I am in a bind, I definitely do not want to pay $160 for a 2nd hand replacement hard drive (totally ludicrous!), I am a student and I definitely do not have that kind of (disposable) cash at the moment. I plan on calling them tomorrow, but I want some advice on how I should proceed. Will they accept it if I return the defective hard drive (what the hell do they want it back for anyway?) back now? Paying is out of the option, I simply do not have the resources to pay at the moment.

    Thanks.

Just tell them it was an error on your part, and that the drive is on the way back home to Levono.

I would call them and tell them you didn't see a return label in the original box so you didn't return it. They will probably send you a new return label. Then just send the old drive back. They generally give you 30 days to return the old part before billing you for it. If you don't take care of this they may void your warranty.

Yes I doubt you will have any problems -- they just want the drive back.

They want it back so that they can repair it and use it as a refurbished, or just to prevent fraud. If you were allowed to keep your defective parts, what would stop you from calling in and saying your hard drive was defective (when it is not) and then having a 2nd drive for free?
