I just recieved my T61 3 days ago. I love it, yet it is somewhat slow in booting up vista and opening programs. When I look at task manager, I notice that 90 processes are going on and cpu is used by about 90 percent. I need to find a way to uninstal some of the thinkvantage stuff without doing a system clean up. Another question I have is if I can download any lenovo thinkvantage software that I uninstall? I am not very good with computers, so any help with this would be deeply appreciated

How long after bootup do you view the task manager? 90 percent usage seems high for the CPU, especially if you've allowed it to "settle down" a bit. Do you know what's using most of the CPU resource? PM me and I'll try to help you out.

    1. Defragment your computer. Defragmentation using the Vista defrag utility will also automatically index your files.
    2. Uninstall all junk software. (Norton, AOL, Google, etc.)
    3. Control number of ThinkVantage applications. Visit the ThinkVantage software guide in my signature to figure out which ones you want and which ones you don't. There are also links to each program in case you want them.
    4. Disable system restore and Lenovo ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery. Delete any backups they have already made.
    5. Install all Windows Vista/Defender updates.

For some reason I cannot uninstal AOL. Also, is there anyway to re-downoad any of the lenovo software in future in case I change my mind. also, should I delete the diskeeper program that came with the computer, or is vista's difragmenter not enough?

I find it easier to do a customized factory restore and get rid of any pre-installed programs that come with it. Just press the blue thinkvantage button during boot up and use the restore factory setup feature. When it ask you to restore to factory default or custom restore, chose custom and you will be able to pick the applications you want and what to not install.

Then the system will start fresh with the programs you want without the bloatware. Keep in mind that the process may take a couple of hours to complete, and that you will need to reconfigure your user account, fingerprint (if applicable), additionally installed programs, etc.

Thanks to this tip alone I freed up some room on my measly 60gb HD. I had no idea system restore was stealing 5.5 gigs from me. Once I get to school though I may want to re-enable system restore in case Vista seriously gets corrupted. If you disable both of those backup methods do you suggest another method of backup?

Umm I kind of recommend system restore if you can afford the disk space. It's saved my butt before.

Anyway, which processes are eating up most of the cpu? Google the offending process names to see what they are.

Know how to specify how much space it can use? MS screwed around so much with all the different settings and I have no clue where its at.
