I have a y740 with 2080maxq GPU and i7-9750h CPU. (17 inch version)
While the machine is pretty cool and quiet during daily use (including gaming), my CPU temperatures during both combined CPU/GPU stress test and CPU stress test seem to be higher than they should be, when looking at reviews and reports from people with this model.
Namely, my CPU benchmarks get into 90C zone sometimes while averaging in middle 80C, while my during combined test CPU temp averages at 90C, unless I try to limit turbo boost clocks (If I limit at 3.0 I can get them around 80C). May be I am wrong, but these temperatures do seem to be higher than they should be.
Are these temperatures too high for 17 inch Y740? Or I am worried for no reason?
Thanks.

It's not too high for a benchmark, especially some benchmarks which create unrealistic loads on the CPU/GPU. If it's cool and quiet for gaming then it's fine.

I agree that load is unrealistic, but people usually report lower temps. These temps are after heavy undervolt...
As for too high for benchmark... you can't really go much higher than 93-94C on CPU, can you? 100C is the limit, no? I am concerned, because my impression was that Y740 usually have lower temp, even during combined GPU/CPU load... And 85-87C on CPU only load, is by about 10-15 degrees higher than 70-75C that people report. And its even without the spikes at 90C+ -
85-87 on a CPU only load isn't too high for a benchmark. That's normal. Your question is whether you need go exchange the laptop, right? The answer is no. If you want to drop the temps of the CPU benchmark even further than 85, then you can use an aftermarket paste. Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut is the best silicon paste.

When I run CPU/GPU stress test during regular room temperatures (~25C), my CPU temps average at 90C or higher, with spikes sometimes close to 100C. (That's unless I limit my Turbo boost). Is this temperature still considered normal? All said above, is with 150mv-170mv undervolt. Mostly 150, as I felt these temperatures are safe. Are these temperatures still considered normal?

I think its normal. Youre testing in a warmer room than others. In my 15 y740, undervolt + stress test cpu using throttlestop/prime95 yielding average cpu temp of 92, whereas if i put the computer above the aircon-hole, temp went down to barely 70.

I also noticed that when cpu gets hot, (stress test) there's a "plastic" smell coming out of it (from the holes that exhaust hot air). Is it normal as well? Or it should raise some alarms?
Need an advice - should I try to exchange my Y740?
