I've had my T400 for about 6 months and it has worked flawlessly except for this one issue that seems to be more and more common lately. When I try to shut it down it gets stuck at the windows is shutting down screen, or hibernating it gets stuck about 3/4 through the loading bar. I'm not sure what I have done but if you ask questions maybe someone will be able to help!

If you need more information please ask. I would like to fix this.

Also, one time the speakers did seem to crackle and lose the driver but I restarted it and it worked fine. Every now and then when I am turning off my laptop now the shutdown noise crackles.

Do I need to reinstall drivers, etc.? If so what? I am considering switching to windows 7 but I dont want to be forced to because of this issue I am having.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

seems like some files are corrupted. Maybe run a registry cleaner. Or try to fix some of the files through Vista Repair Disc.

Also run cmd and type in sfc /scannow to scan for corrupted files

I was going to say the same. Have a backup? Or is it time to re-install?

Yes I have everything backed up. I think I might try to deal with it until I upgrade to Windows 7. Any opinions on windows 7 yet?

The times I've seen this happen is because of a rampant service that won't shut down.

Try a commandline shutdown with the /f or -f switch and see if that changes things. Usually in, a normal shutdown Windows wait will wait for a running process to close. If a service is not stopping correctly and not returning the proper return code, this could cause a shutdown sequence to stall.

FYI: Don't run that command until you manually close EVERYTHING first. Otherwise the switch won't give an option to save and will kill all your processes (eg running apps).

Can you explain that a bit? Are you suggesting that Win 7 is "awesome" if you do not have switchable graphics?

Or, is Win 7 "awesome" if you do have switchable graphics?

I don't know - I have neither! Though my T400 which is on its way will have a switchable graphics option. At least I hope so!

    Cheers!

Windows 7: "less bad than you expected" pretty much sums it up
