I did clean XP installation, then only 30 processes running in the background, but now there are 50. How could I know which are junks that I can clean out<>? I don't know what are they since most of them are named by breviation.

If you end explorer process, then from Task Manager follow File menu and the click on New Task (Run...) and type in explorer.exe, you don't need to restart the computer.
For excessive processes running on your computer, you could Google them out and see where they belong, like ZaZ said, or you could download a copy of Spyware S&D and do a system wide scan. Also don't forget to check if you have enabled some auto start program after you installed some software. From Spyware S&D you can easily prevent those processes from starting once you turn on your computer.
