I'm looking to purchase this laptop for my daughter.

    Newegg.com - Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p (59390909) Intel Core i5 4200M(2.5GHz) 6GB Memory 1TB + 8GB SSHD Hybrid Drive 15.6" Notebook Windows 8

    I have a couple questions:

    1. Can I take out the 1TB + 8GB SSHD Hybrid Drive setup and just replace it all with a SATA III SSD? I'm assuming since it's a Haswell chipset it should have native SATA III Support. What would I need to do to reinstall the OS.
    2. Has anyone loaded Windows 7 on one of these instead of 8? Any issues?
    3. Is upgrading the ram easy? I'm assuming there is a few screws on the back I just need to pull and the ram is visable.
    4. Can I swap out the 2nd Video card and add in an optical drive in it's place, Like a DVD burner or a second HDD?
    5. I saw under the review on the newegg site that someone mentioned if I went to windows 8.1 I would have to do a v-bios update fo the SLI to work. Can anyone confirm this?

Sorry for all the questions, but Newegg has a real good deal on these laptop today and I wanted to purchase one if I can make it work. Just seeing what options I have available.

    Thanks.

    1. Yes. Many users have done so. To reinstall the OS you will either need cloning software or a copy of Windows/Linux
    2. Yes. No issues, just use the Windows 7 drivers on the Lenovo driver page for the laptop.
    3. Yes. The trickiest part would be to remove the back panel. After the back panel is removed, the main HDD, SSD, WiFi and RAM can all be upgraded rather easily. Getting to the CPU keyboard and display is a bit harder, and replacing these might void your warranty though.
    4. Yes. You can buy the optical drive here: Y500 Removable DVD Burner DB36 | Lenovo | (US), even though it is marked for the Y500 it works with the Y510p.
    5. Yes, this is true. Head to the Lenovo drivers and download the vBios update for 8.1, based on the GPU you have in the ultrabay (750M or 755M). I will provide you both links here:
