Need to cool it down (Quadro NVS 140M)

Hi guys, I'm concerned about the temp readings of my graphic card, NVS 140M, according to GPU-Z temps are always between the 60C and 63C degrees.

I didn't notice til I got my laptop off my desk and touch the bottom of the laptop, it's really warm.

Temps on the graphic card worries me because high temps decrease on the lifespan on the electronic components, also the surrounding ones.

I'm running Windows 7 with the latest driver from nVidia.

60 degrees idle? That is a bit hot. Although its not unusual for T series laptops to run hot. The video card which runs my T61P also runs about 50 degrees idle and over 70 when under load.

I suggest checking the fan and seeing if anything is obstructing it. Also do you have a cooling pad? That helps a lot

 

Yeah Stewie, at idle (just browsing the web) I get those readings, I'm thinking in disassamble the laptop, clean the fan, remove the thermal grease and appliying some quality grease and check temps again for better results. I always have the laptop over my desk, I must say though, it's been really dusty and my guess is that the fan is obstructed with a good amount of the damn thing, and I don't have a cooling pad.

Yeah, get some AS5 all up in there. You probably know this already but I suggest using some propyl alcohol for removing some of that old grease

Some time ago I saw some pretty good videos from Lenovo on how to take appart the laptop for maintenance, I can't find them anymore though.

Does anybody know where can I find those vids?

I am planning to do the same with my T61p when i go through my list of things to do to the laptop to prepare for a GTA 4 workout, and keep it cool while doing so. I am surprised at some of your idle GPU temp readings though, my T61p with the FX 570M is idling quite comfortably at 43 degrees right now... Only went up to about 65 while playing CoD-2 demo, maxed out settings on a 1920x1200 WUXGA.

On a side note though, I'd like to know if there is another Quadro NVS 140M users that register these temp readings, or if are getting lower/higher readings.

Is there a way to control the temperature without open the laptop and screw with the heatsink?

 

Yes I know, these readings are odd, though I have read that some users have reached 100 C readings on their Quadro NVS 140M

I know this is a low low end card, but 62 C is just to much.

 

well once upon a time I tried to mess with the fan through speedfan. I'm not sure if I remember (my t61p is currently being repaired) but I think my hardware was not compatible with it.

Also you can mess with the battery and decrease performance for less PW usuage. Although thats not the most ideal solution

 

Bah the g84 chips... all those chips are faulty. I think the NVS 140M is based off the 8400M, which if Im not mistake is a G84 chip

Right now I have the power settings through Lenovo Power Manager in power saving mode.

I guess the graphic card is some nasty power hog.

 

According to GPU-Z the Quadro NVS 140M is based on the G86M chip.

Edit: Not nice to know I might have a faulty GPU. While I haven't had any problems with the card, it's not nice to have these readings. I'll contact lenovo to see what they can do about this...

 

G86 chips were also faulty.

 

I would suggest making weekly backups; my system (see sig) was going fine but due to the faulty G84M chip, prematurely died- I'm awaiting my ATI powered T500...because of this fiasco, I'm sticking with ATI for laptops (while still preferring G92-newer nvidia for desktops..)

What should I do, I'm thinking calling Lenovo and see what they can do about it. I have had the laptop for almost 1 year, and I have used every single day, I never had a shutdown due to overheating, nor other issues.

It kinda bothers me that they sold laptops knowing there were faulty chipsets and they did not do a recall or made a public announcement regarding this issue.

I think the same now, one must feel like ripped off by Lenovo/nVidia when you pay a premium for a laptop just to discover they put (on purpose or not) faulty components that cause catastrofic failures (RRoD anyone? )

May I ask, how long took you to get the laptop dead?

 

Not all chips are destined to self destruct within 2 years of manufacture date, they could, with people are not aware of their computer's enough to turn up their fan speed and monitor temps, i will bet you all that my T61p will not fail within at least a 4 year time frame, to start. I will also be playing GTA 4 on it. Why haven't you sold your T61p yet to get what you can before it does fail, if they are all faulty?

Idle: 67-70 C
Load: ~80-90+ C

T8300, Quadro NVS 140m. The mainboard on my T61 was replaced ones though (around 3 months ago), due to the failure of the NVS 140m.

 

OK, I just ran 3DMark05 and got a max temp reading of 77 C.

I don't know how bad is both readings, but I bet you ain't good at all!

 

Could it be W7? I dual booted and seems like W7 runs hotter than Vista maybe due to Aero. Turned it off in Vista but left it on in W7. My notebook has been on for the past year almost 24x7. Only with W7 did I ever sense any heat on the top left side. Clean out hte dust with an air can?

Also does your Password Manager work under W7?

 

Do you have to actually run 3D Mark to get temp readings? Want to check mine but not stress machines as I dont use it to play games.

Are there other good temp measure software programs that are free?

 

Woah.... those are some really high numbers.... The ATI card in my T500 never gets above 60 C while gaming...

The only time I have had an experience with overheating was with a crappy hp laptop I had. The nvidia 6150 in it idled at... 85ish and got to 110+ sometimes... Obviously, the computer died, with the battery, wireless, and harddrive with it... Luckily though, it was just in warranty, so I got it fixed free! Now it's fine. (apparently, all of the chips were defective, and coupled with hp's poor cooling... a lot of problems popped up)

No, you can read your temps just downloading a free app called GPU-Z. I dl from filehippo.com

I ran 3DMark just to stress the card.

I know what you're talking about, my sister has a HP dv6000z with the same IGP, the nVidia 6150, and one day I decided to ran GPU-Z and see the temp readings, I was shock to see 80C at idle and near 100 C under load. Now, that laptop has over two years of heavy use and abuse, and has started to act on her, maybe the printboard is showing signs of damage.

 

According to GPUZ, mine is about 60% to 61% from using this board. So you say its too hot?

 

After further review, I think you might need to send your notebook in or try to lower the GPU temp externally with a cooler. The latter doesn't seem reasonable as your responsibility if something is wrong. How old is your T61?

BTW I plugged mine into AC and the temp dropped, fell asleep so the machine was definitely idle and started using it and still at the 50 degree level.

 

This T61 was born more than 2 years ago.

 

Use a program called TPfancontrol, it lets you view all temp sensors in your thinkpad (AC, battery,CPU,GPU,RAM,etc), as well as set fan speed plans, you can keep the fan on full speed if you are gaming if you want, this is especially important on the T61p for me. You can edit TPfancontrol's "Smart" plans in notepad to change when fan comes on and at what speed, then override the BIOS fan plan to use the smart plan instead.

 

Full log including after one hour of use. No delta bro, steady at 55 degrees. I use it on AC as stated in the previous post.

Baldwin, the temps on your system are somewhat similar to mine, I get 58C - 63C depending on ambient temperatures, right now is pretty cool here, so I'm getting readings in the order of 58C.

My Thinkpad has been in my property since beginning of the year, so is not that old I guess.

So, that are your readings while idle? For a NVS 140M look good to me, maybe I will buy a laptop cooler (Zalman). I was looking at the vids from Lenovo support and accesing the heatsink is somewhat cumbersome and I don't want to wreck my laptop, since it's needed to disassamble the whole thing.

 

The temps are for usage toward the end. Basically same as at idle. I think when I first booted up the temp in the room was warm. I think maybe its the normal temp for this card. Wouldn't worry about it bro.

 

I will post the 48 hour readings in 2 days. You can copy into Excel and analyze for us

 

Hi BHT, while the readings are "normal" for this card especifically, I wouldn't call'em normal at all, readings above 50C are just to high for a graphic card, even though components in laptops run hotter than in desktops.

Something was wrong with these cards, and this temperatures can jeopardize the entire system, I'll need to find a way to "cool it down" for sure, because it goes in detriment of the lifespan of the product.

Nice you take the time to do this, is good for other NVS users to know what readings are getting fellows and being able to compare the logs.

 

I agree with the person who disagree with Beverly Hills Trojan. It not as if his data is earth shaking. It could be summmed up in a couple of sentences. There are few things more boring than raw data.

Yeah no kidding, it's a GPU... not your internal body temperature you are monitoring. I don't understand how the data you posted is so important, why couldn't you just get that program i was talking about so that you could monitor it consistently and base your cooling changes on that. TPfancontrol works with the T2x's, T30, T4x's/p T6x's/p and most likely the T4xx's/s as well, because the controller has not changed greatly.

I changed the coolant. Used Prestone instead of the cheap Autozone generic one and seems the engine is running cooler.

So the prelim conclusion is it takes some time for the GPU to cool down. Seems the heavy jolt of Windoze loading be it V or 7 flavas causes the heat to rise then decline to a steady state level of about 55.

 

You would post even more just to "cheese" me off wouldn't you? I don't see what the problem is with GPU temp, 55 is a fairly sustainable temp for a laptop GPU, not damaging, do you even game on it?

 

my 2 year-old T61 w/ NVS 140M, win XPro stayed steadily at 54 with a 4 firefox tabs opening, 1 download while being operated on AC (with battery plugged in). Monitored using GPU-Z. Is this temp level normal on my system? Thanks

 

OK Guys, I have some news and questions for you.

I called this afternoon at Lenovo's tech support toll free, according to the tech rep Lenovo has had some complaints about the card in question. He told me that dl the Lenovo Thinkvantage Toolbox, and ran the stress tool which also records the temperatures of the cpu and gpu. I just did that, I ran the stress tool just for the graphic card and is passed, so far so good, but the temp readings were in the order of 74C which is pretty close from what I got running 3dmark05 and checking with GPU-Z.

When I ran the full stress test the things were a little differente, I got 82C in the GPU core and presented an error at the end of the test (don't know if caused by temperature or a software glitch).

Cutting to the chase here, should I send the laptop for repair?

What Lenovo would do? replace the MoBo? if so, will this come with the same crappy GPU?

I'm somewhat concerned here, don't know if I'm doing too much fuss about all this but being this my main system I don't want to get a expensive paperweight in a few months due to a faulty GPU.

Your readings are pretty close to mine, I don't like high temps on my GPU, is like a pattern on these Quadro cards.

Also don't know if I'm making a big fuss out of it but I guess normal readings in most laptop GPU's would be between 40C - 45C while idle.

 

True, i guess that could be considered abnormal, the 570M in my T61p in balanced power management idles around 40-45, and sometimes dips below 40. Also, i have some good news for both of us, new drivers for all 8M GeForce cards were released as beta's today, adds GPU acceleration to HD video, which i am looking forward to, and most importantly they also support their Quadro counterparts, which is us.

NeedMore4Less. I dont neceassarily think you should return it unless its a like for like exhange in which case you would be getting a moboard with the same GPU that could be refurbed and of questionable duration as to useful life. If they are willing to upgrade you to a new T400 then its a different story and of course you should go for it. But that offer is remote.

I have the same card. Have no intention of returning or calling. I dont play games on it and never event thought about the temp. I do know of someone who had a new Dell notebook with the same card that had a memory failure which is strange. My guess is it was caused by the video card's heat given location. But that notebook is still running and Dell promiseed to extend the warranty.

You got a warranty. Unless it craps out on you then dont worry about it.
