I haven't had any issues so far with the laptop, but high temps will indeed decrease the lifespan of the product.

No, I haven't. I'll give them a try. I suppose that it wouldn't do much, since is well know the issues presented by the Quadro NVS 140M in general.

I used the driver browser and keeps showing me the driver I have already installed.

 

god damn it, bloody thing, well just go to the gaming section of the forum, page 2, and to the "new 195.55 nVidia drivers" post, i think that's what it was.

 

the brother dont need no new drivers. not all of us are using an underpowered vid card to play games all day. or would not have used a TP to do so. its like driving a hyundai in a drag race or formula one. lol.

 

My advice: Sell the machine and cut your loses and headaches and use the money to buy a new Thinkpad

 

I got the same machine and similar temps averging 55 but then again I'm not going to lose sleep over it. My TP is on almost 24x7 and in use when I'm awake almost all the time. Its not going to fail on you. If it fails on you should be 3 years down the line. Lenovo wont give you a new T400 if they would enven consider it. My guess is they will swap out a refurbed moboard with the 140 on it. You could go through 20 of them an that is what they would do.

 

Thanks for the advice, but I would lose money doing so.

I called tech service and they told me to send the laptop for further evaluation, I guess I'll give'em a call (local repair shop) and see what they offer.

I asked the lenovo tech rep if I can get a extended warranty at least for the GPU because it was a well document case and the manufacturer (NVIDIA) admitted there were issues in all the grapich cards made with the defective chipset and he told me that I needed to send the laptop for evaluation and they will decide from the report generated from the repair shop.

Personally, I don't see any satisfactory solution for this, the most they'll do is replace the MoBo with another faulty GPU, I'm thinking in applying some quality thermal grease and clean the fan, if I can lower temps down by 6C I'll be happy.

 

if you are within warranty, and a regular fan clean doesn't help, then you can call up lenovo service to get this done.

 

I don't trust the tech service over here.

A question though, I want to remove the CD/DVD unit (ultrabay) and for some reason I can't.

you shouldn't need to remove screws to take out an ultrabay device... that's what the whole premise of the ultrabay was designed around;hot swapping. Also, happy to say that i am running my T61p fan at level 2 in TPfancontrol manual controller, temps are very acceptable, and fan is still whisper quiet at 2570RPM.

These are mostly in use temps. I really dont have the machine idle or would shut it down.

Do all you other folks have similar temps for you NVid?

Ok... yeah those are some high temps alright, but what is your deffinition of "in use"? What applications were you using at that time you took the screen? I had 3 tabs in IE8 open, and running on balanced power management, Lenovo power manager, and uTorrent.

 

Scanning some documents. IE8 open but not in use. No other programs open. Seriously do you think its excessively hot? I dont hear any fan coming on. Rarely do I hear it come on. Maybe every two months.

 

If I spay compressed air into the heat sink area (meaning not disassembling the casing) will that help?

well you shouldn't need to remove a screw, but there is a small screw included with the thinkpad in case you want to lock the ultrabay.

i see, that's what those screws are for. yeah i want to lockdown my ultrabay. peoples stealing airbags out of cars these days so means some idiot running off with my ultrabay is possible. isnt the video card on the left side? why would i need to remove the ultrabay to clean dust around the videocard area? btw, i already sprayed the area on the left. sprayed canned air in and a whoosh of dust came out the back.

 

i think its just a custom to take every removable bit away before start taking screws off
