    Need ultrabay harddrive adapter. Help.

    I am planning on using a SSD for my primary drive and my current harddrive for storage in the Ultrabay. I need a ultrabay adapter so I can do this. The one Lenovo is selling is $60 and I have read some poor reviews. Do you folks know where I can get a cheap one 3rd party one that works well? I would love to hear some personal experiences. I saw a couple on Amazon and they get mixed reviews. Thanks.

    The third party adapters tend to be more flaky in my experience. I don't know much about the Lenovo made one as I've not seen it.

    Instead of giving wise counsel that has no actionable value, I will offer you something to consider:


    • You cannot ask for an UltraBay adapter. You must specify which ThinkPad model as this will dictate your choice of caddy thickness.
    • Search for the caddy sold by nimitz on ePray.
    • Search for ThinkPad caddy at newmodeus.com.

    I have absolutely zero problems with my solid third-party UltraBay caddies.

    I purchased an ultrabay HDD adapter for my T410 from Lenovo for $60 because I didn't know how good the third party ones are. I've been using it for almost a year now and it's been excellent. However, I probably should have looked at third party options since $60 for an adapter is a bit steep, but I'm one of those people who would rather purchase from the OEM just because I know it definitely works.

    I went to the newmodeus site and saw a lot of adapters but I don't see one for the T500, but for other models. Could you point me to one that would work on that site? Thanks.

    I offered my initial suggestion to you without knowing your ThinkPad model. I have never upgraded a T500 and don't know whether newmodeus.com does carry a T500-compatible UltraBay caddy.

    From my experience, support persons at newmodeus.com reply to email queries promptly.

    I also have one from ebay for $15 (SATA 3 6GB/s). It works perfectly fine on W520.

    I bought from ny-computek Ultrabay caddy for T520 which is 12.7mm and it just arrived to me. I haven't even opened the package. Will update you on how it goes. However, some things to look for are:
    1. special latch on the Ultrabay - that holds caddy in the laptop, so to release it you have to pull the latch button on the underneath of the laptop. Without it caddy will drop out of laptop if you tilt the laptop.
    2. make sure you know what height you need 12.7mm or 9.5mm or else.
    3. that plastic thing that protrudes from the back of caddy - I have no idea what it is, and some ultrabays have it, some not - make sure you know which one you need. Just open your CD/DVD caddy and check if it's there or not.

    Other than that - they all should work fine.

    Reporting back. I ordered the one from nycomputek and it arrived quickly. It looks great and it works perfectly. I have my 2nd drive in my machine now and it is detected perfectly. I am very happy with it. Trouble free and inexpensive.
