New Carbon X1 is slow! Help! Should I return?

My new Carbon X1 is slow, particularly with the internet. I did side-by-side tests with another two-year old Lenovo I have, the T420.

The Carbon X1 loaded the page slower almost consistently, and when the page required reloading as you read along it was much slower. For example, when you scroll down facebook and it reloads more information, the Carbon noticeably lagged.

My Carbon has 2GB more memory than the old one; the proceessor for the Thinkpad t420 is i52510M-2.3 v. the Carbon i5-3427U @1.8.

(When I switched from using Chrome to Firefox, it got better but its still much slower)

Is the Carbon just a worse machine? Should I return it??? Advice?

 

the CPU's are pretty much on par. Do you have a dedicated graphics in your T420? But it seems to me that the problem is software related. I'd check the CPU/memory/hard drive/network usage while loading pages.

 

I don't believe so.

How do I check those usages? I would say its software too, which is why I switched from Chrome to Firefox and it certainly helped (in chrome I would literally see black and white squares on some websites), but it didn't help completely.

 

I too would suspect software. Reinstalling Windows is a good place to start.

It might also be the wifi. My X220 has been particularily susceptible to interference in crowded areas on 2.4ghz with certain routers. My cousin experienced the same when he got his X230. My solution was to use 5ghz, he fixed his by using a different router, but still on 2.4ghz.

 

^^ Second that. Could run ping Google -t in the command line to see if there are spikes beyond 100ms.

 

I use my X1C as my main computer driving 2 24" screens i do not see any lag what so ever on day to day usage.
I use all 3 of the major browsers. While i do not go to facebook i go else where.
I agree with others what have you installed? What Add-ons do you have? Something conflicting.
what OS are you using is it the same as the T420?

 

Yes its the same operating system. I have no add-ons installed besides flash (which I have on the the t420 as well). I tried the google ping and it was 57.

I dont know what else to do. Its definitely lagging.

 

I was having the same problem. my trackpad was inconsistent and sometimes wouldn't even work! browsing the web was a nightmare and everything seemed just to be slow.

I called Lenovo and they asked me to check if I had installed any of the drivers/updates... I hadn't! it never prompted me! then opened up the Lenovo Update application and the windows update applications and spent an hour downloading installing and restarting... NOW MY COMPUTER WORKS LIKE ADREAM. the trakpad is back to normal and everything is nice a zippy.

Since I've received my X1, I've had two BIOS updates. The current BIOS version is 1.13 released 3/26/14

(To check your BIOS, right-click on Start button, select Run. Enter msinfo32. Look at BIOS Version/Date)

To update BIOS and all your other drivers, use System Update from Lenovo. Find it under All Apps or just search for System Update.

 

I found that some of the intel wifi updates were buggy.. For example, with the stock drivers that shipped with the X1 I was able to connect at 600MBIT+ and was getting consistent wireless AC speeds. However, after installing some combination of intel driver updates, my connection speed rarely maintained better than 144MBPS and even latency (ping, etc.) was poor.

I factory reset the units which DID immediately resolve the performance issue but unfortunately I can't provide you details on the exact driver combinations because I did not write them down. If you just took the X1 out of the box (no tweaking of the OS / drivers) and you still have the issue, then I am not sure what your problem is. However, if you did update the drivers like I did, then I would recommend a factory reset to the Lenovo image or to try to manually roll back the driver updates.
