    Hello,

I'm running a T60 and I just installed a new WD3200BEVT HD, an upgrade from the 80GB that was in the machine orginally. I'm trying to load XP on this now, but it will not install. I put the CD in, press any key to load from disc, then it says inspecting hardware and the screen goes black and just sits there. I can do nothing more. Its like it freezes right at this point. The XP disc I used was an XP2 Pro cd, OEM. I also tried my Lenovo recovery CDs (not some I made myself, but a set from Lenovo) and those do not work either. I should stress, my Vista Business upgrade CD I got from Lenovo does boot to the install just fine.

I believe this is an issue with Windows XP, but I do not know what. I tried both compatibility and ACHI in the BIOS for the SATA settings. I'm running the latest BIOS (1.14) and I'm all out of ideas. Anyone?

    Thanks.

your bios probably does not have the needed setting

try downloading the sata driver for your hd and put it on a usb floppy, cd, or slipstream into the xp install disk. when prompted for a driver near the start of xp install, point it to the driver location!

    that should work for u!

gamer, The install does not even reach that point. As soon as it says detecting hardware it goes into the blank screen and I cannot go any further.

watchtower, thank you for your advice.

After following the clean install guide I was able to get the installation working! If only I had the ability to read before you posted such a helpful suggestion, I wouldn't have had to waste your time.

Anyway, what happened was I had installed Ubuntu on an encrypted partition. For whatever reason, XP did not like this, once I formatted the hard drive (i.e. wiped all the partitions), it worked fine. Vista did not display this issue, so I assume its due to old code in the XP installation.
