Greetings I just received a Seagate Momentous XT that I purchased from Amazon for my X200 running Win 7-64 Pro and I am wondering if either the drive is dead, or if I am doing something wrong.
I have a hard drive caddy for my docking station and had hoped to place the new drive in there and clone the old drive onto it that way. I put the drive in but the computer does not even know it is there; I know the caddy works because it immediately picks up another drive I have used in it on occasion which already has files in it.
I have a Thermalake BlacX; which connects via USB & allows me to hot swap drives. I put the new drive in and get nothing; If I grasp the drive I can feel it spinning; the laptop though doesn't respond. If I put a different drive in it though it is again immediately recognized by the computer.
So, the question is: Is the drive D.O.A or am I just D.U.M?
TIA

As it is a "brand new" drive, you need to ask Windows to initialize it before Windows can recognize it.
Windows orb -> type "disk manage" (without quotes) into search box -> select Create and manage hard disk partition -> see Disk Management application window -> right click on the new drive and select Initialize menu item
That is likely the "problem." -
Ahhh; so the cause then was my being D.U.M; been quite awhile since I played with fresh drives.
Assured that the drive was indeed not DOA I downloaded the free version of Macrium Reflect and all is well.
Thanx for the input
