I just received a WD5000BPKT Western Digital Black laptop hard drive and since installing it my T530 I can feel a very fine vibration. I am wondering if this is normal? I did not feel any vibration from the drive I took out. It was a Seagate 320gb thin. Thanks for any input.

Did you attach the metal caddy to the new drive and replace it with the rubber rails? That said, it's not uncommon to feel slight vibrations from a 7200RPM disk.

The WD Black can be noisy and can cause minor vibration. (Noise emanates from both platter spinning and head movement.)

Yes, I did attach the metal caddy and rubber rails. So, it is probably like Kaso said the WD Blacks are noisy and cause some vibrations. It also seems to make the fan come on more as well, but I am not sure about that yet. Anyway, I may put the Seagate back in and make this an external backup:-(

I doubt it, HDDs generally run very cool compared to the CPU, GPU, RAM, WiFi card, etc. You might just be hearing the disk spin. You can try adding a bit more insulation on the sides of the hard drive to prevent vibrations.

I just thought I would update a bit. I figured out that the "fan" noise that I am hearing is actually the drive. From what I have been able to learn this is pretty normal for these drives. I also understand the the "vibrations" that I am feeling are also pretty normal. So, if you want a silent computer don't get the WD Black 500gb. I do have an email out to WD to see what they say, but I suspect that I won't learn anything different. Thanks again for the input.

Hitachi 7K drives were among the most quiet and fast drives I ever had, but since they were bought by WD I think (or it was by seagate), hitachi 7K500 and 7K750 drives are hard to come by. The Caviar Blacks are indeed rather noisy, performance is good, but the noise they make tends to annoy me. The Momentus XT 500GB I have in my N50 is almost as noisy though and it does bother me at times too, vibrations are also easy to feel.

All I buy are Hitachi Travelstar drives. I bought their latest 1TB drive. Sucker is fast for a HDD.
