So I've had similar issues as others with the EM tool for Win8 Lenovo provides on their website, ver 8.0.2.3. It didnt work properly for me, and I also had issues with the Wifi radio switch not behaving correctly (wasn't able to switch it on). It was enough that I had to go back to Windows 7.

Found an update on Lenovo's china site for the EM tool, version 8.0.2.5. Works perfectly on my Y580.

My Y580 came with 8.0.2.4. No problems that I have noticed.

My Y580 came with Win7. I wasnt able to get a number of PM functions to work in win 8 when I upgraded. I have a new unrelated issue now with the newest nvidia driver 314.07!
