I have a t43 with a flexview screen which I have always been very happy with. Even looking the screen from a 85 degree angle the colors look the same. I am curious how the screens on the current Lenovo's are? Do they have anything like the Flexview screens any longer?

the x201 tablet would be the only laptop that has a LCD which comes near the flexview LCD used in the previous Txxp thinkpads.

In terms of viewing angle, the new panels are still TN ones - they won't come close to the FlexView IPS screen's viewing angles. Color reproduction will likely still be superior on the FlexView, however, the T510/W510's FHD panel is supposed to be pretty good in that regards. In terms of brightness, the new displays are all LED-backlit, so they will definitely be brighter.

lead_org is right, but make sure it is not the multi-touch version. The multi-touch interfere with the viewing angle.

are you saying this from experience or stuff you've read on the internet?   i have no problem whatsoever seeing my EMT display from various angles and use it that way at least 1/3rd of the time.

This I can back up from lots of experience. Compare two models side by side (easy when you have multiple of the same notebook with different options) and the touchscreen models always look worse. If you dont need it, dont buy it ;)

I have a T42p UXGA FlexView and replaced it recently with a T510 with the HD+ display. I expected a major downgrade but it wasn't as bad as I thought. The HD+ display has a strong blue color cast that has to be tamed with calibration. After that it works acceptable for me, considering the aging FlexView is getting pretty yellowish and losing brightness. So viewing angle and color accuracy are of course inferior, but the HD+ screen makes it up with even illumination, way better contrast and brightness (I didn't think I was a brightness junkie, but it is actually not to be underestimated when the office is flooded with sun light.)

Is it really fair to compare a new LCD vs one with a six year old backlight?

Compared to old flexview thinkpad, the FHD panel has much better colors, brightness, but viewing angles are very much inferior. Contrast when viewed straight on is almost identical.

that said if i had to choose between the two, I would take the FHD. I absolutely hate the 4:3 aspect ratio on laptops and flexview is severely lacking in brightness.

I thought the same thing when I read that. Problem is though someone can do a search stumble on a misguided post like that and not realize that the person is comparing an new LED backlit screen to a near-dying 6 yr old CCFL screen. Totally misleading if the point is to company IPS and TN screens.

Well, maybe not, but you don't get new FlexViews these days, so a "fair" comparison (current LCD vs new FV) would be neither realistic nor relevant for the transition that the OP is interested in. Right?
