I;ve had a new T400 for a few weeks, but just noticed this today. The front right side of the laptop consists of a roughly 2+ inch part with 2 screws underneath. When I place my thumb on the top, and my index finger at the bottom of the piece and "pinch" it, it moves slightly makes a soft click sound each time - its a little loose basically. I've tried tightening the screws but they seem to be tight already. Does anybody else have this problem? Is this to be expected in T400's?

I think he's talking about the upper-right part of the palm rest, the part that's directly to the right of the "right arrow" key. On my T400, right underneath this part, is two screws. One screw holds the palm rest, the other screw is for the HDD bay(I think)

And to answer his question, this part on my machine isn't exactly rock solid, but then again, the entire plastic on the right side, near the DVD drive bay, isn't too solid - If you pinch it with fingers. It doesn't bother me at all.

Thanks for your replies. I have to say, it DOES bother me a little. I wasn't expecting this on a laptop renowned for its build quality. Oh well...

I had the same issue. I hadit replaced (another reason, not the "give"), and it's the same.

I think this is part of the design to dispate shock/limit damage in a fall. I know it seems weird, since the screws are tight. You could ghetto-rig it with stiff foam strips on the inside if it really bothers you; I left min as is.

I am not sure if you are describing the same problems I had on my T500, which I bought in May.
But I had two areas on my laptop that were loose and made plastic clicking noises.
There was a space gap under the the right arrow key. When I pressed the right arrow the keyboard would move and bang against the frame.
I placed a round green felt pad inside the palm rest, under the arrow, which fixed the flex. See first pic.

The second noise came from the palm rest area seam under the Thinkpad logo.
I stuffed cardboard/paper between the upper/lower palm rest seam.
    This stopped the clicking noise.
