I received my new T400 with Windows XP installed and Vista Business on the hidden partition - I am thinking maybe I should go ahead and give Vista a trial and restore from the hidden partition.

If I decided to go back to XP, would I need an XP installation CD with a valid key?

Yes, mine absolutely came with XP Pro installed - it is part of the Vista Downgrade.

I didn't receive any software DVDs.

why can it not come with xp installed?
I think you have to pay for the cds if you wanted them, it may have been one of the options when customizing your order, if not then im guessing you would have to call and pay for them. They are probably like 20 bucks or so, sometimes the reps are nice enough to jsut send you them for free.

I'd like to know the answer to this also, because someone on another thread said if you choose the above option it means vista comes installed but you get a disk with XP on it in case you want to downgrade. I found it odd that they would list an a different option just for an additional disk with XP. Can anyone clear this up?

Note: The downgrade from Genuine Windows Vista Business is intended for business, educational and public sector customers requiring Windows XP Professional that expect to order at least 25 PCs annually.

Yes, when I ordered I had the option of Windows Vista Business with XP downgrade CDs or installed with Windows XP Professional with Vista Business on the restore partition. I am planning on contacting them to make sure that I can get an XP recovery CD before I restore and give Vista a chance.

I was really going by the word of mouth on Vista and thought I should at least give it a chance as long as I have a way to go back to XP.

I also got the xp downgrade.

    No CD/DVD came with it.

It came delivered with XP Pro installed and Vista Business on the hidden partition.

The license for Vista is on the sticker on the bottom.

I assume that the creation of recovery means the XP can be restored, but I imaged the drive anyway.

Well, I contacted Lenovo support to find out about getting some media - the guy told me that my hidden partition would have XP, but he wasn't certain - turns out he was correct.

I just have to call them back and they'll send me the recovery media for Vista Business.

In the mean time I'll create recovery media for the XP install as recovering to Vista from the media will wipe the computer (according to the support guy).

I think... if you pick the Business with XP downgrade, then XP is installed and Business is on a partition.

If you go Vista Business and get the XP Pro RDVD then it is a Vista machine and you have recovery media for XP Pro.

Just my thought; any clarification is greatly appreciated. I am trying to choose between these two.

I would go with Vista installed and XP on DVD. My logic for this is simple. You get XP on the DVD and Vista on the HDD, just make recovery disks of vista in vista and viola! you now have discs for both operating systems. If you get XP installed, all you get for Vista is a COA on the bottom, no disc for Vista.

I ordered Genuine Windows Vista Business downgrade to Windows XP Professional. It came with XP installed. I reinstalled the OS from the partition, which contained XP, not Vista. For Vista, I needed to buy the recovery discs from Lenovo (which did not please me in the least).

But with my order, at least, XP was on the partition, not Vista.
