I just purchased a T41 Thinkpad and it is starting to lockup, requiring 2 to 3 restarts per day. I have 512 MB of RAM and experience the problem when I have Outlook, Word and Excel open at the same time. My old Toshiba laptop (Portege 3480CT) had no problem with running all these apps at once.

Anyone have suggestions on how to diagnose the problem?

Well, start by ruling out the usual suspects. Go download AdAware from download.com and start there. If you're not using this app already, you'll be surprised by what it removes. The issue may not be spyware, but it's always good to remove that crap anyway. I'm assuming that you are running some sort of current virus protection as well.

Have you upgraded the battery monitoring tool yet? The one mine shipped with was buggy as hell, swallowed all the CPU about 5 times a day forcing a reboot.

It seems as though there are many people that are having significant issues with the T models. With this in mind, would anyone suggest the X series? I am trying to decide but then I started looking at the T's and then read the reviews. Help.

    Rockhead,

How many ram modules do you have 1x512 or 2x256? If you have 2 chips, try removing one at a time and swap them as well. My cousin had a similar problem with his Compaq Evo notebook and nothing fixed the problem (systemboards or software) until I told him to swap the ram. AFter that he has been working flawlessly for the past year.

    Good Luck!

In general the T and X are both solid machines. The main problem with the X is lack of optical drive.
