Received a new T42 2379DXU today. Wanted for a long time, got with educational discount. Opened the box, fit the battery, turned on. Windows XP starts. Immediately after: BSOD with a message that says: The Session Manager Initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000003a (0x00000000).

Checked the web, some people trying to dual-install Linux had this problem. On Microsoft web site, it says this message is specific to Windows NT! It is recommended to re-install OS. (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;317189)

Called tech support (Atlanta), was recommended to ship back for service. Very frustrated as we really needed a laptop this weekend. Don't they at least start XP before shipping?

If I were you, I would return it for a full refund, and then order another one.

I could not re-install the OS as the Access IBM button did not provide that option either. I was told by Customer Service "it was practically corrupted" and to ship it back and that I would receive a replacement in a week. At least customer service works well.

If the second one is not working either, I am sending back for good as we need to travel out of the country in three weeks for an extended period of time. What other brands have good international support coverage? I had looked at Sony FS550, Fujitsu 3510, and Toshiba M45 before this one.

Finally received a new unit from IBM after returning the old one. It is working fine. Got wireless connectivity right away. Testing various functionality now. One problem so far: after watching a DVD, DVD ROM drive would not eject. Software eject did not work either. Had to resort to "emergency eject hole". Did not repeat again but I hope it does not surface again in the future.

It is a beautiful machine... Keyboard is awesome. No overheating at all (something our previous Sony died of). Glad that we got the SXGA. I was worried my wife would not like it but she had no problems with the font size. Browsers run pretty fast compared to our other laptop, maybe the 7200rpm disk helps.

I used misc Dells and Sony before, this one is amazing.
